A YOUNG NIAGARA FLOODS SIX FLOORS OF A SKYSCRAPER, Torrent From Broken Pipe in Wail St. Exchange Build- ing Halts-Business. ‘There was @ eurplus of water in the ‘Wall street district to~day—not ghe kind of water used for irrigating ‘stocks, but regular water, aqua pura, H20. Inci- dental to the surplus of water the Wall Street Exchange Building, in Exchange Place, between Broad and William streets, Gave a good imitation of Niagara Falla for half an hour. The Wail &reet Exchange Building ts & (twentyour-story etructure, and ao great deal'of force Is required to send @ head of water to the top floors, Ail this force was behind a stream which issued from @ broken pipe on the sixth yr. ‘ The stream issued forth with’ eum- clent force to sweep a man off his feet, 80 jt could not be approacned. It was necessary to shut off the supply in the basement, and before that could be done tons and tons of water hed passed through the break in the pipe and cas- caded down the elevator shafts and the stairways. As the management of the building was not equipped with diving sults for tenants and visitors the elevators were out of commission. From two to three feet of water splashed down the etair- cases and swept through the corridors like @ river. The doors of offices on the lower floors were closed and chinks were barricaded with mats, rugs, car- pets and towels, but in spite of these precautions many of the office rooms were flooded. The flood occurred just after. noon, and August Belmont & Co. on the sec- ond floor, Spencer Trask & Co. on the first floor, and their big banking and ‘rokerage concerns were compelled to suspend business in the busiest period of the day, During the inundation persons wishing to visit or leave the building had to pass through the adjoining Kquitable Buikiing at No. 7 Wall street. cnaahanalteialeenss SCHOOL EXPERTS NAMED TO DO MOORE’S WORK.
