The patient had had his entire nose de- stroyed in an accident, so that there Was not the least bit of bony support left to build a new nose on. The patient could not get any work to do because | of his appearance. When he applied to the hospital some weeks ago for rellef Dr. McWilliams told him he could have a new nose if he was willing to give up a finger. The patient assented and Dr. McWilliams went to work, He first removed the nail from the ring finger. of the left hand and had the patlént put up his finger to his nose and lay it along the length of tt. Then removing the skin of the finger that lay next to the face he aewed it to the face, flesh, bone and all. The arm was then set in a plaster of Paris cast, so that it would not move. MOBS TO SEE GUNMEN, LIGE FEAR OUTBREAK AMONG THE GANGSTERS ——- ~—<42-—-— — “Gyp” and “Whitey” Lewis Take the Stand and Swear Rosenthal Was Shot by Vallon and Webber, Aided by a Stranger. USE SAME LANGUAGE IN DESCRIBING MURDER. “We Were Not Armed, Did No Shooting and Didn’t Ride in Gray Auto,” They Swear to Jury. Harry Horowitz, known as “Gyp the Blood,” and “Whitey” Lewis went on the witness stand to-day at the trial of the gunmen for the mur- der of Herman Rosenthal. Both swore before Justice Goff and a jury in extraordinary term of the Supreme Court that they had seen the shoot. ing but had taken no part in it. They declared they were not armed and did not ride in the “murder auto.” “Gyp,” who went on the stand first, declared that the actual shoot- ing was done by a stranger they had seen in “Bridgie” Webber's place, and by Webber and Vallon, “Whitey” backed him up. They accounted for their presence at Webber's by declaring they had gone there to give “Jack” Rose a chance to “square” himself on the charge made in the un- derworld that he aided in “framnig up” Jack Zelig. Not in the history of criminal trials in this country have so many of- ticers of the law been detailed to set up barriers against the morbidly curious and check the scramble to reach a trial room, Fully one hundred men of various squads and details were posted in the building at the re- quest of Justice Goff, who evidently fears that some sort of violent dem- onstration may be made by the underworld before the trial is concluded. SCENES OF RIOT AT Ne RECESS. In svite of all these precautions there were scenes of riot within and without the building just before the resumption of tHe trial after the midday recess, Lillian Rosenberg, wife of Lefty Louie, was mobbed as she was leaving a restaurant across the street from the Tombs, and a force of reserves had to be summoned to protect her. This squad was drawn from the Criminal Courts Building forces, and they had no sooner, gone outside than another mob charged in through the White and Frank- lin street entrances, SWEETHEART TRIES TO SAVE ACCUSED IN TARRING OF GIRL Strong Effort to Prove an Alibi for One of Six Men Charged | With Brutal Act. Men and women rushed the etatr- ways and strove to fight thetr wey to the rotunda. There was sporadic fght- ing throughout the corridors, and for fifteen minutes the building was in a state of bedlam. It was not until Capt, Tlerney organized a sertes of fly- \ng wedwes and scattered the orowd ike sheep, then posted solid lines of men at every avenue of ingress, that order was restored and the way cleared for those who had business in the courtroom to enter.
