Gus Ruhlin, the “Akron Giant,” who has not fought since he defeated Tom delphia to-night, He will have as his opponent “Mexican Pete Everett, the Western heavy-weight fighter, with whom Champion Jim Jeffries eefused, to box a four-round bout in Salt Lake City a few months ago. Ruhlin and Everett will meet in a six-round bout. The battle the big men will put up will no doubt be a slashing one. ‘They are both aggressive fighters and fairly good punchers. The winner will get on many fights In the future. Ruhlin, if he wins, will be in a position to demand a fight with “Kid McCoy. If he succeeds In putting Everett to sloep he will claim a fight with either Bob Fitz- simmons or Champion J4m Jeffries. Ruhiin’s ambition is to get on another fight with the champion. Ruhiln claims he has Improved considerably since he was defeated by Jeffries and says If he gets another chance he will give “Jeff” a harder fight than he did before. Ruhlin realizes that he must win a few more fights before he can claim a return match. He Intends to sall right into Everett to-night and knock him out as quickly as possible. It successful dn beating Everett, which he probably wiil be, Ruhlin will issue a challenge to fight “Kld" McCoy or James Corvett a Imited-round bout for a side bet of $2,500 or $5,000. He will be seconded by his manager, Biliy Madden, and “Denver Ed'' Martin, Bverett will be looked after by Tim Callahan and two other Philadelphia fighters. They will fight at catchweights. Just two weeks from to-day Ben- | nings will throw open its gates to the racing public. Tratners and owners who have been preparing their charges at various places throughout the country are already arranging for the shipment of thoir strings to the Washington track and, judging by the announced inten+ tions of those people, the meeting will prove the greatest in years, Many owners who haye been campaigning at New Orleans will start thelr horses north this weck, and dy this time next week {t 1s certain that stable room at Bennings will be at a premium. “Father Bill” Daly intends sending a string of fifteen horses to Washington this week. He is only onc of the many owners who have horses in training in the metropolitan district who have such plans. Big Pley in Big Handicaps, For the past week much speculation has been done in the future books for the big races, such as the Brooklyn and Suburban handicaps and the Amerloan Derby. In the first two named events Hermis still remains a 6 to 1 favorite, but the great son of Hermence {s not the only one which 1s being backed. Uledi, a candidate for the Suburban, has received a heavy play. Last week the horsc’s odds were 200 to 1, but so steady was the play on him that to- day the best to be had against him i lag to 1.
