18 ADOPT PLANS SUGGESTED BY ARCHITECT ‘BURNHAM \/ v arious Big Interests Are in Harmony With the Schemes for an Ideal Greater San Francisco. . The Burmham plans for the rebuild- | ing of San Francisco in the north | =nd south of Market street districts were adopted with e few minor chages by the BStrest Committes and the urnham Plans Committes after an all-dsy joint session yesterday. A “orps of engineers and experts is now at work perfecting the miinor detafls, | and st to-morrow's sessicn of the ocomamittes of forty the report will be handed in and its fate decided by that conmmittes. The plans as a whole met with the spproval of nearly every member of the two first-named committees, num- bering about thirty in all The plan to reduce the grades leading up to Nob Hill seemed to sult all, while the general impression prevalled that the City Hall would be reconstructed at Van Ness avenue and Market street, and that Eighth street would be ex- tended through to Golden Gate ave- nae Burnhan's plan to oenter all the great raflroads in ome paletial struc- h and Bry- ed everybody Pacific repre di@ not protest fes of such an signs of ittes went into of its plans, othing left now they may desire ACCESS TO NOB HILL. t as taken | than an vhich Burn-| be in accord- | | 4 views of the engineers, | evs and business men | of them raised his| Architect Howard | map, pointer i ed how the grades and ss made DR. PIZRCE'S REMEDIES. A Trite Saying. I is & trite saying that no man s | stronger than his stomach. Dr. Plerce's | Golden Medical Discovery strengthens the stomach—puts it In ape to make | pure, rick blood—helps the liver and | idneys to expel the poisons from the body and thus cures both liver and kid- ney troubles. If you take this natural blood purifier tonie, you will assist Your system in manufacturing each day :‘m of rch, red blood, that is invigo- %o the brain and nerves. The - run - down, delbmu?d 80 many people suffer from, is ueually the effecs of ppolmm in the blood; 1t is often indicated by pimples or bolls appearing on the skin, the face becomes thin and the feellngs “blue.” Dr. Pierce's “Discovery ” cures all blood humors as well as being & tonic that meakes one us, strong and forceful. It is the only medicine put up for sale through druggists for like purposes every Ingredient of which has the professional | endorsement of the leading medical writers of this country, Some of these endorsements are published in a little book of extracts from standard medical | works and will be sent to any address | free, on recelpt of request therefor by Istter or postal card, sddressed to Dr. R. V. Pleros, Buffalo, N. Y. It tells just what Dr. Plerce's medicines are made of. “The Words of Praise” for the several ingredients of which Dr. Plerco’s medi- cipes are composed, by leaders in all the several schools of medical practice, and recommending them for the cure of the diseases for which the "Golden Medical Discovery ” is advised, should have far more weight with the sick and afflicted than any smount of so-called “testi- monials * so conspicuously flaunted before the public by those who are afraid to let the ingredients of which their medicines are composed be known.—Bear n mind that the "Golden Medical Discovery ” has THE BADGE OF HONESTY on every bottle wrapper, in a full list of its ingredients. Dr. Plerce's Pleasant Pellets cure con- stipation, {nvigorate the liver and regu- late stomech and bowels. { the City cle he had sought to overcome, and| rqarm-u and, advice. A% éasy to this portion of the city, which affords a grand view as well as at- tractive building sites. Howard was in favor of ‘widening Commeérclal street, from the ferry to Dupont. He saild this would be bet- ter - than adding many feet to either Washington or Pacific, as it would give better access to the point jesired. He sald also that the latter two thoroughfares were fairly wide at the present time. According to the Burnham plans, the detalls of which have appeared in print numerous times, the grades of all streets tending in the direction of Nob Hill would be leveled so that the aver- age -passerby can readil§ gain access to this beauty point of the ¢ity with- out the inconvenience he has exper- jenced in the past. All the grades must.be eased to a large degree in or- der that this result may be accom- plished. Mr. Calhoun, speaking for the United Rallroads, sald the plan was very practical one and would suit his| company beyond the question of al doubt. He added it would give an| oltlet to the center of the city and improve the property manyfold. At the conclusion of the discussion Burn- ham informed the committee that he was very well satisfied with its dis- cussion of the plans. It was.unani- mously decided to accept the proposed specifications with such recommenda- tions as the engineers and members of committee should see wise to GRAND CENTRAL DEPOT. When the afternoon session opened Architect Burnham went into details regarding the erection of a grand rail- road depot in the vicinity of Ninth and Bryant streets. He said this® was what every big city should have and he added that San Francisco's beauti- fication would not be complete with- out it. According to Burnham, this struc- ture should be for passengers only and have plenty of space to it. A grand park and vestibule should mark the approach. He pointed to Washing- ton and Cleveland as examples of the derived from such a structure that all the railroad com- panies would in time see its usefulness and withdraw any present objections. Here Hood interposed in behalf of the Southern Pacific. In his opinion depot would be all right for the t and peninsula trade, but said that Eastern traffic by way of the Southern Pacific was destined to land the ferry depot. Burnham, however, thin a short space of time sridge or tunnel would be ucted across the bay and Oak- and’s fate as a railroad center would be doomed for a certainty. Regarding the acquisition of certain 4 property, Architect Willis said the city would be in a posi- to condemn certain land of the tion ratlroad and pay for it in time. EXTENDING EIGHTH STREET. The widening and extension of street was the subject of a thy discussion and brought out y theories. The committee was ready to report favorably on this plan, ien Abraham Ruef interposed with objection, stating that the exten- of hth street through and past ghth sign Market would mean the abandoning of the present City Hall site. He added that it was the wish of most of the sipal officials and the general public that the City Hall be rebuitl on its old site. A& Ruef was in Zavor of extending and widening Seventh street instead. Here Burnham rose and stated to the com- mittee that it was his ldea to extend ghth street for the reason that it vas so located at the commencement as to afford an ideal sight. He sald Hall had long been an obsta- that he always had a l(vng‘ng'in his heart.to see jt removed. He said now was the chance to realize his cherished dreams, for the hall would have to be | built. reR‘::ef finajly yielded a point and the details of the project were again taken into consideration. It was at last de-| cided to let Eighth street be widened and extended right through to Golden| Gate nue. 1If the City Hall is re- built, hth street will extend around it in boulevard fashion, and if the mu- nicipal building is to be removed Eighth will be cut through the prop- erty. I’?egnrdlng the removal of the City Hall, the committee not in a posi- tion to speak with au ority, but sev- | eral members are laboring under the; impression, gained from the munlcipall‘ building committee, trat the building will pass out of existence and in its stead a group of bulldings—a Hall of Justice, Hall of Records, City Prison and other llke structures—rise at the corner of Van Ness avenue and Mar- ket street. CITY HALL PROPERTY. If this action is taken the present City Hall property will have to be dis- posed of and that at the avenue ac- quired. At the present time such action is not permissible, according to the charter. Therefore this question will have to come up before the judiciary committee, the legislative committee and the other committees. Ruef said he would do all in his power to secure the passage of the special amendment | needed. Ruef suggested that Folsom and the diagonal street that i3 to be extended to the ferry be widened to 125 feet for protection in case of fire, as well as beautificatfon and practica} purpoaes.(‘ Chairman Law was for making the fire line south of Market street 125 feet in all instances, but thé majority of the committee seemed to think thet 100 feet, or a trifie less, would be suffi-| clent. It was then decided to allow Third, Sixth and Ninth streety to re-| main as they are, but to reduce the width of the sidewalks to eight feet. Eleventh street will be widened, but the plan to widen Twelfth was aban- | doned. ANOTHER CONFERENCE TODAY. At the ‘conclusion of the session the experts decided to meet again today, when maps would be ready, and.sug- gestions, and the minutes written. This will require a vast amount of work, more in fact than the men care to han- dle, but as Burnham and other noted authorities zre here for a limited time it was deemed advisable to finish up| o the work while it is possible to secure ™" THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, SUNDAY, MAY 20, 1906.
