FRANCISCO CALL, SUNDAY, DECEMBER 13, 1903. COMMITTEE TQ SELECT DATA IN AID “HUGGER JACK” OF PROPOSED BOND ISSUE IS CHOSEN| MEETS REPULSE He Attacks Miss Marie Carecot, Who Surprises Him With | a Hard Slap on the Face POLICE LOOK FOR HIM Citizens May Repeat Their Former Method for Appre- hending Importunate Wretcly —_—— 1! Berkeley Office San Francisco Call, v 2148 Center Street, Dec. 12. “Jack the Hugger” is around again { |ana so are his arms. “Jack” has been doing some promiscuous hugging in the neighborhood of Berkeley statlon lately and reveral defenseless women, | going home in the dark, have been at- | tacked by him, though they are shy about giving their names to the public. The police, however, are looking for the man in the hope that they may | get him in jail and keep ‘him there un- til his strange humor wears away. Miss Marie Carcot of 2032 Addison street was attacked by this human bear while she was going home last night about 10 o'clock. It is dark .in the shadows of her home and before she knew it the “Hugger” had his arins | around her. She resented his importu- | nities, however, by a good hard slap on the face tha. sent him reeling in the other direction. Then she took to her heels and ran to her door, screaming at the top of her voice. “Jack” recovered | quickly from the blow she gave him | and hurried after her, but she managed | to get inside her door and slam it in his face. Miss Carcot was too ill from fright, to leave her home to-day, but through her relatives she gave the police a good description of the man who ac- costed her.- She describes him as big and black and burly and poorly | dressed. This is the second visit “Jack the | Hugger” has paid to Berkeley within | the last two years.
