PALD ALTO STOCK FARM 13 [:l[lSE[I Famous Breeding Es- tablishment Goes Out of Existence. Last of the Horses Raised There Will Be Sold in the Fall. R Spectal Dispatch to The Call, STANFORD UNIVERSITY, Aug. 8.— The famous Palo Alto stock farm, which | was founded thirty years ago by Senator Stanford, was practically closed to-day. The positions of the superintendent and : | his assistants have lapsed and no more | breeding or other work will take place | | upon the farm from now on. There are | | still 160 horses which have to be kept | until next fall and a few men will be re- | tained to care for them until that time. Superintendent Covey has not as yet de- cided on his plans for the future. Senator Stanford founded and kept up | this great institution for many years at | great expense and the marvelous suecess | | which he gained in breeding blooded stock 1s a matter of history. He built magnifi- cent barns, stables, paddocks and race tracks covefing many acres, and had hun- | dreds of horses all the time. |two farms, one on the border between San Mateo and Santa Clara counties for trotters, and another near Mayfleld which {was a running farm. Large numbers of fine horses | have been bred and trained, but no racing ! has been engaged in. For some time past, | however, it has seemed advisable to close | the farm, and to tendent has been shipping large consign- ments of horses to the East at regular high prices. | As long as men are interested in horses | |and harness racing the feats accomplished at the Palo Alto farm and the marvelous speed developed by the horses raised there | will always be remembered. It was there | that Electioneer was bred, undoubtedly .ione of the greatest horses that ever lived, above his grave. Ile was the greatest | producer of extreme epeed the world has ever seen, more than 1100 horses in the “"30 Ilist baving sprung from him. His | sons and daughters held the world's rec- | ords for yearlings, two, three, four and | five-year-olds, and for mares and stal- lions. - 1 Among the many great horses developed jon this farm Palo Alto was one of the u- | most famous. During his lifetime he | trotted to the world's record of 2:13% and | held the world's record for a high wheeled After his death Sunol, | one of the Stanford horses, lowered this | to 2:08%. The skeletons of Electioneer, | Palo Alto and Occident are to be seen in the Stanford University museum.
