In reply we have no objection what- ever to any employes joining any organ- ization they deem fit, providing it does not in- tertere or unfit them for the duties we require of them. At the present moment we understand that many of our clerks belong to your assocla- tion: this we would encourage rather than dis courage, tend to clevate rather than to lower them. We hardly think it would be the wizest course to pursue on our part to request, as you Sug- gest, any employe to act contrary to his own wishes or inclinations in his soclal, political or religious views or ideas. As long as the clerks we employ are thoroughly competent and gen- tlemanly in their deportment and give us good service, for which we pay them liberally, we think we should leave to themselves their pri- vate life, their liberty and their pursuits of happiness, to enjoy as they see fit, rather than to_be arbitrary. 1f an organization is founded on these broad and Jiberal lines, should not its magnet be strong_enough to draw them, rather than for us to direct them in the course they think they should pursue? 1f it 45 your pleasure and desire to leave any cards with us for the benefit of your organiza- tion you can feel at perfect liberty to do so. Sunshiny, warm days sug%est the most comfort for the feet. We are ready to talk Oxfords for men and ‘women, for we are certainly prepared to satisfy the most particular i “ws trade. The ladies have gone back to daintiness—light, swell Oxfords, well finished, made of good materials in the most artistic fashion. Dainty little feet never were in place in the big mannish looking Oxfords, and this year the dainty shoes for ladies are strictly fashionable. B For men, the Oxfords are heavy and real man- nish, of good appearance and swell. We have the best line of men’s Oxfords in San Francisco for $5.00. Saladin turned his back for a moment and as he did so the thief gathered up several of the watches and bolted for the coor. In his flight he dropped three, but succeeded in getting away with property valued at about $250. For an instant Sa- ladin did not realize what had happened. The thief had passed into the street be- tore he could raise an outery. Following along, Saladin shouted to pe- destrians to stop the thief. Many heard his appeal, as the streets were thronged at that hour, and many saw the fleeing thief as he rushed down Third street in the direction of Bryant. The alarm was raised and several people started with the jeweler In the chase. Soon a mob hurried along and police whistles warned those in advance that a crime had been committed. Despite the effort to effect hiz capture, the bold crook turned the corner of Bryant street and disappearcd in a small street in the vicinity.
