Most of the members immediately left for their homes, but those who are here maintained the utmost reticence concerning the pro- ceedings of the committee. Speaker Mil- ler, when asked for a statement, refused absolutely to say what he told the com- mittee. From meager information from varfous sources it is learned that the ex- amination assumed a very wide range and went into the entire history of the proposed traction bill at this session. Questions were asked concerning the pol- icy of the Republican steering committee of the House, and it is .aid that the Speaker admitted that his action in put- ting through the amendments to the Lindley bill under the gavel was in ac- cordance with an agreement of the steer- ing committee. The Speaker was unable to furnish the committee the names of any persons who had told him that there was money behind ihe Mueller bill. Regarding the approach on which he based his statement to the House, the Speaker is said to have told the commit- tee that some time ago he was called upon by two men, who discussed the Mueller bill with him and told him that money would be used to secure its pas- sage, and that if he would grant the roll calis that would be demanded by its ad- vocates there would be a large sum of money in it for him. The committee, it is reported, examined him at some length upon this point, but fafled to secure any- thing more than a general description of the men. The Speaker sald that he had probably met both of them, but that at the time he could not identify them, al- though it was plain that they were under the impression that he knew who they were. It is sald also that the Speaker told the committee that he had informa- tion that a short time ago a lobbyist in assisting the Mueller bill had been over- heard to say that to buy the Speaker.” The Speaker’s evidence was taken by a stenographer and will be in readiness for the committee before the meeting Monday night. It is probable that it will be laid before the House on Tuesday. YOSEMITE VALLEY. Rushing, Roaring l(ountaln Torrents Leaping Over Yosemite’s Walls. PR IR OROVILLE, April 25.—Shadrick Sowell, who killed Supervisor E. P. Kimbrell and Edward Dickhouse last month, and so ended an old feud, may never be legally punished for his crime. The cell wherein the perpetrator of the double homicide is confined may hold a corpse before the case comes on to trial instead of the nervous wreck which it now contains, Sowell has suffered tortures of mental anguish since his confinement in the coun- ty jail at this place. Sleep has been a stranger to him and has visited him only often enough to afford snatches of disturb- ed rest and keep the man from going vio- lently insane or into total collapse. The use of oplates had to be resorted to to-day when Dr. Karsner, the county physictan, visited Soweil's cell. While the doctor reports that the prisoner’s condi- tion is not at this time alarming, it Is known that Sowell's nerves are in such a badly shattered condition that if some way s not devised for the relief of the sufferer's mind a fatal outcome is cer-| tain. Sowell broods over the death of Dick- house. The killing of Kimbrell apparent- 1y does not affect him, and he has never | once expressed regret for shooting this man. -But the picture of the unjustified killing of Dickhouse, a man who had al- ways been his friend, and- the leaving of a widow and three small children there- by to the care of the county haunts Sow- ell continually. BAKERSFIELD, April 25.—James Hep- burn, a laborer, aged about 50 years, was kflled by the eastbound Santa Fe flier this morning. He was deaf and did not hear the train coming. NEW YORK, April 25.-Mrs. Hetty Green has appeared in the Supreme Court in Brooklyn as the defendant In a suit brought against her by Alice M. Ladd as administratrix of her husband's estate. The suit was to recover about $10,000 com- missions for the alleged sale of bonds to Mrs. Green. The case was called before Justice Gaynor, and when the plaintift failed to appear Justice Gaynor dismissed the complaint. “God seems to bless me in my suits in court,” said Mrs. Green before she left the courthouse. “T had a case in Chicago. where as administratrix of an estate | sued a Presbyterian church to foreclose a mortgage. They tried to freeze me out, and even the ministers preached against me, but before I got through with them T managed to get $1600 more than I asked for in the first place.” Sarah Bernhardt plays at the Lessing Theater, Berlin, from May 2 to 3, with one matives. |
