CIGARS SEIZED BY INSPECTOR Havanas Worth $1670 Taken and Owner Is Arrested. | A cigar smuggler was captured yester- | day by Customs Inspector Durkin in the person of S. Gomez. It came to the no- tice of Durkin some time ago that Go- mez had been in the habit of selling finc ! Havana cigars to small dealers about town. The man exhibited his samples in boxes properly stamped, but afterward | filled his orders with smuggled cigars of | the same quality, but in unstamped pack- | ages. As he was selling at a trifie be- low the usual price suspicion fell upon | him, and Inspector Durkin, finding Go- | mez emploved in his vocation on Sixth | street, followed him to his room at 558 Stevenson street and placed him under | arrest. A thorough search was then made of | the room, and 4175 unsiamped cigars were | found. They are of the finest kind, and in the opinion of Customs Surveyor Spear are of the value of §1670, or 40 cents each. | It is believed that Gomez has been deal- | ing in smuggled goods for a long time and the revenue authorities are looking up his associates and antecedents, as they think he is a member of a gang of smug- glers. R sl Special Dispatch to The Call. REDDING, April 18.—Redding will in the course of two years' time have water communication with San Francisco Day if the plans that have just been formu- lated are carried out. There are very good reasons advanced that they will be carried out to the letter. Rights of way are now being secured through lands in Shasta and Tehaiaa counties for a large canal to connect with the big irrigating canal that is just being cempleted in Glenn and Colusa counties. This canal will start from the Sacramento River about a quarter of a mile belew Redding, pass through the rich and fertile lowlands and almost parallele the South- ern Pacific railroad track to Willows, Glenn County, where it will join the irri- gating ditch. Representatives of an Eastern syndlcate have been in this neighborhood for sev- eral days and surveys for the entire length of the canal have already been made, though the object of the survey has not been given out for publication. The company expects to secure all rights of way by June 1 and begin active work on the canal. It fs intended to make the ditch large enough to carry a body of water sufficient to float 2 small-sized steamer #hd barges, and a line of passenger and freight boats | will be put on to enter into active com- | petition with the rallroad and river tran: portation companies in the carrier busi- ne: Besides this, the water will be used for Irrigation and for the gemeration of power. It promises to be one of the iargest enterprises ever floated in North- ern California, and its ‘materialization will mean much for the advancement and prosperity of the northern counties. Viemnese Superstitions. VIENNA, April 18.—In the Imperial Opera-house and the Imperial Burg Thea- ter, Vienna, all boxes which until recently bore No. 13 have been renumbered on ac- count of the superstition attaching to th number, and the consequent difficulty e: perienced in disposing of them.
