OAKLAND, Dec. 13.—Following the con- ferring of the degree of their order the Royal Arch Masons of Oakland Chapter gave a banquet last evening in Masonic Temple. The Call was the first to give the news of how the Santa Fe secured control of the Cali- fornia and Nevada Railroad for its en- trance into this city, and is the first to give the plans of that railroad for enter- ing Oakland. The new ferry that is to be operated from Emeryville pier will begin running April 15, and the first ferry-boat for that system will be launched from the ship- ards in Alameda on Monday next. The plans are large enough to satisfy the most enthu- ! siastic boomer, no matter by whom car- ried out. SUBWAY CONTRACTED FOR. | The litile sireet of Yerba Buena, down which the California and Nevada mnow | runs, will be the center of all of the| railroad operations. There are two fran- | ’: | pue. # on chises on this street, the Santa Fe sys- tem having one for a double-track road on the north side of the street from San Pablo avenue to the Southern Pacific right of way and the Oakland Transit Company has a franchise for a double track on the south side of the street for the same distance. This will completely cccupy the street, but will not interfere with property, for the Santa Fe system has purchased all‘of the property facing Yerba Buena street on the north, running from San Pablo avenue to the bay and for 400 feet north. This space will be oc- cupied by the yards and railroad build- ings of this company, including a passen- ger depot on the corner of San Pablo ave- the south side of this street the Oakland Transit Company owns a similar plece of property running from San Pablo avenue to the bay and 400 feet deep. Upon this property will be erected all of the shops, carhouses and the central stations of the Transit Company. As the buildings planned by both of these companies are expected to be ready by April 15, when the ferry is to be put in operation, Emeryville will soon be a scene of great activity. The Santa Fe trains will not be run on the pier at all, but will stop at their de- pot just west of Sag Pablo avenue, and their cars will be pfcked up by the elec- tric motor engines of the Oakland Transit Company and drawn down the pier, where they will discharge their passen- gers into the ferry-boats. The Oakland Transit Company will con- trol the pier and the approach thereto. The approach to the pier will be made under the tracks of the Southern Pacific Company,.and the contract has already been let for an immense concrete culvert, through which the cars will be drawn by electric motor engines. E. B. & A. L. Stone have the .contracts and the cost BUILT AT EMERYVILLE FOR USE OF THE SANTA FE. o will be about $75,000 for the subway alone. DEPOT AT END OF PIER. Walter J. Mathews has completed the plans for the depot at the end of the pier and work will be commenced upon this structure by the first of the year. The new building will be much more grace- ful in design than those of the Southern Pacific Company and there will be one big change from those now in use. The ferryboats will be run into the building and 1 set under the roof of the ferry depot, close up to the pilot-house. This will enable passengers to leave boat or depot in rainy weather without getting wet or trying to raise umbrellas for a short trip up the apron. There will also be a short curve toward the north at the end of the pier and the trains will run into the back of the depot, across the depot, instead of running into it length: wise, as on the Oakland ferries at pres- ent.
