W., WASHINGTON, Dec. 18.—The activity of the manufacturers of the United States, measured by the figures of imports of manufacturers' materials and exports of manufectured articles, is greater than ever before. Imports of manufacturers’ materials in the ten months ending with Osctober, 1802, are, as shown by the figures of the Treasury Bureau of Statistics, | $065,000,000, against $201,000,000 in the cor- | responding months of 1896, $274,000,000 in | the corresponding months of 159 and $319,- | 000,000 in the corresponding months of 190L. | The tmports of manufacturers’ materials | in the ten months of 12, therefore, are | 15 per cent higher than those of 1901, the | highest record heretofore, and more than | 80 per cent in excess of the figures for the | corresponding months of 18%. On the | other hand, exports of manufactures are | @lso lurger than those of any preceding ten months' period, with the single ex- ception of 1900, showing an Increase of | $15,000,000 over the total for the ten months of 101, and being actually more | than double the figures for the corre- sponding months in 18%. NEW YORK, Dec. 13.—A banking con- solidation was announced Friday which will bring into harmony the large finar- cial and insurance interests of the Mutual Life Insurance Company, the Equitable | Life Assurance Assoclation and the Mor- | ton Trust Company. This was brought about at the meetings of the directors of the National Bank of the United States. | which was acquired some months ago by the interests which control the trust com- pany, and of the Western National Bank. The directors of the Bank of the United States voted to amalgamate with the Western and to make the combined capl- tal of the banks $1,000,00. The directors of the Western National, in which the Equitable Life is largely interested, voted to fuse with the National Bank of the United States upon a basis mutually agreed upon by the interests in control. The bank will continue under the man- agement. of Vice President Snyder, tue president of the Western, and will be known as the Western Bank of the United States. The vice presidents will be Richard A. MeCurdy, president of the Mutual; James E. Hyde, president of the Bquitable Life; Thomas F. Ryan, presi- dent of the Morton Trust Company, and | Henry A. Bmith of the Western National Bank. The Mercantile Trust Company, the Prudential Life Insurance Company and George J. Gould are interested in the ‘eonsolidation.
