Enormous Vote Received by Some Candidates on State Ticket, Spectal Dispatch to The Call. BACRAMENTO, Nov. 15.—The hope of the California Democracy that it had won one State office In the recent election has gone a-glimmering. Almost complete re- turns show that Lucien Shaw, Republican nominee for Associate Justice of the Su- preme Court, has a plurality over B. C. Farnsworth (D.) that reaches well into the thousands. With only Humboldt, Mariposa, Merced and Modoc countles to hear from, Shaw has a lead of 153% votes. Of the missing counties, all but Humboldt gave - Democratic pluralities, but the enormous Republican vote {n Humboldt will very nearly overcome them. Shaw will have about 15,000 votes to spare when the full returns are in, . The canvass of the vote for Assoclate Justice reveals some Interesting facts. One is that Judge.Angellottl ‘of Marin leads the highest Democratic nominee by 69,675 votes. As earlier returns indicated | that one or two other Republican nomi- nees ran even ahead of Angellotti, there is reason to b#ieve that the Republican pluralities for a portion of the State tick- et have exceeded 75,000, Friends of Frank C. Jordan of Alameda, Republican nomi- nee for Clerk of the Supreme Court, are’ clalming the latter figure for him. NEW YORK, Nov. 15.—Considerable amazement was manifested in this city by an interview with Frank A. Sargent, Commissioner General of * Immigration, who 18 to investigate Katherine A. Ting- ley’s Unlversal Brotherhood at Point Loma, Cal. Sargent sald that those with whom he had spoken on the subject were favorably imklined toward Mrs. Tingley and her work. 4 Sargent will not go to San Diego unf some day next Weck and then it is his purpose to make inquiries among those connected with the institution as to the work that s being done. The opinion was freely expressed that, while the Commis- sloner may gain access to the innermost precinets of the brotherhood’s domains, where strangers. are forbidden to tread, now that those of the “inner circle” are prepared for an investigation, he will not see anything more than it is wished he should see nor learn more than they de- sire he should know. A'prominent man in this city said to-day: “L knew Mrs. Tingley about five years ago, as well as several of her followers. I 4o not know what her teachings are at Point Loma, but I do know that I learned 80 much of the woman's personal char- acter that I realize I could not afford to be identified with her in any way. I have read what has appeared in the Herald with. considerable interest. She has astonished me.” This is precisely the attitude that the New York and San Francisco Socleties for the Prevention of Crueity to Children have taken in their proposed united-ef- hood. The societfes go even further and unhesitatingly acknowledge that the dis- coveries they have made have convinced them that the brotherhood’s doctrine is a growth that must be removed before it contaminates the entire country. Dr. Jerome Anderson, who was formerly a tutor at Mrs. Tingley’s school, is quoted as saying, among othey things: “The public knows that Point Loma is rot the place to produce sound men and women. Mrs. Tingley is full of whims, oddities and uncertainties and resorts to things not exactly nice toward children. For instance, it a child disobeys, it.is kept wilhout food' until it becomes obed- fent. Speclal Dispatch to The Call, SAN JOSE, Nov. 15.—~A rich vein of cop- per ore has been discovered In Santa Clara County by T. B. Gambel, the min- eralogist and mining expert. The discov- ery was made while prospecting for oil. Gambel says the veln is eighteen feet thick and Is certain to prove a paying proposition. Ten tons of the ore was col- lected and shipped to the Selby Smelting ‘Works. It showed an assay of $2760 a ton in copper, $3 in gold and $2 50 in sil- ver. When the mine is developed, it is declared, the vein will run nearly $30 in copper, with a.corresponding increase in the other metals. Gambel has not yet made public the location of his find. He says a number of moneyed men are already interested and the: ledge will be developed and worked. Gambel‘declares that the mineral possi- bilities of Santa Clara County are great. In the past year he has been carefully prospecting the county, and has found gold, silver, quicksilver and Iron ore in sufficlent quantities to pay for the work- ing. - Missing Heir Is Located, MARYSVILLE, Cal, Nov. 15.—John Schwartz, for whom agents have been searching for the 'past two or three months in order that a valuable estate left to him by his mother, who lately died in Germany, could be transferred, was found yesterday on a ranch nea® Dunni- gan, Yolo County. DRIVES AN IRON ROD INTO ELECTRIC CONDUIT Peculiar Accident*R¥most Costs the Life of a Los Angeles ‘Workman. LOS ANGELES, Nov. 15—One of the most peculiar electrical accidents ever known here occurred to-day,Charles Fleld, an employe of the Pacific Electric Raflroad Company, belng the victim. That company is laying a track along North Lbs Angeles street and the engi- neers have set the stakes for the guld- ance of the workmen. It was Field's duty to attend to these stakes and stretch lines from one to the other, so that he track would be stralght. To do this he used an iron rod four feet in length, which he drove into the ground where L . San Franeisco the engineers’ stakes were found. Fleld was seen driving this rod Into the ground, when suddenly he yelled and fell backward uncenscious. His fellow work- men did not know what had occurred, and when they appreaéhed him one of them happened to touch the iron rod. He, too, was knocked down and it was some time before he recovered, ) Then it was found that the rod in be- ing driven into the ground had penetrated the underground conduit of the San Ga- briel Electric Company and had come into contact with a wire carrying several thousand volts. Field and the other work- man did not receive the full sirength of the current, for a portion of it went from the rod into the fground, but electricians say that the shock which knocked him down was from at least 2000 volts of elec- tricity and they consider it marvelous that he was not killed.
