NEW YORK, Sept. 27.—The statement of the Assoclated Banks for the week ending to-day shows: Loans $874,181,800, decrease $13,352,- 000; deposits $376,519,100, decrease $12,351,900; circulation $35,077,00, increase $316,600; legal tenders $70,485,600, decrease $182,900; specie $151,980,800, increase $1,973,600; reserve $222,- 366,400, increase $1, 700, reserve required $219,120,775, decrease §$3,087,0256; surplus $2,206,625; increase $1,578,675. The Financier says: The official statement of the New York Associated Banks last week showed a substantial recovery in the surplus reserve, the result of a small gain in cash instead of a considerable loss and also a re- duction in reserve requirements caused by the general contractior in loans during tne week. The specie was increased $1,975,000 while tne legal tenders decreased $152,900, making toe | net galn in cash ¥1,790,000. The loans show | In the previous week and a larger reaction rangement began. ‘The total August 16 hus been §04,966,200. ‘The deposits | fell oif last week $12,451,000, making & total since the above-named date of ¥86,24,000. The circuiation was inereased by §316,600, and, | as has recenlly been the case, this was dist | tributed among tae larger institutions. The average daily clearings of the bank amounted to ¥24,000,000, aguunst §208,000,000 in the | previous week.' So far as tne cash reserves of | banks are concerned, they were doubtless | eater at the end of the week than was | by the statement. The 31,000,000 goid from London and the $1,000,000 gold from Aus- tralia, which was transferred hither from San Francisco by telegraph, did not reach the banks unti Thursday, and, thereforc, this amount of §2,000,000 counted under the system | of averages for but one-third, or about $6o0, 000, Tnere aecrease since | &) was a transfer from San Fran for but one day, or 3Y0,000. Presumably the contraction in loans which has been In progress for the past six weeks will no longer be neces- sary, now that the reserves have begun to re- cover, and unless the week’s speculation should be greatly sumulated by the improved condi- tion of the banks and the monetary prospects there should be a restoration of the normal situation. More relief will be afforded througn | the operations of the numerous plans of the Secretary of the Treasury, and these may Heavy liquidation of securities has been calling of loans by the banks to make up the T reserves by last Saturday's bank statement. The market steadied and re- covered somewhat in the later part of the week on the hope that the loan contraction had been carried as far as is immediately e e —— Chicago Grain Market. CHICAGO, Sept. 27.—The September deliv- ery was the leader in wheat, and shorts ranged with buyers. While the demand was well sup- plicd, the close was strong on that month.
