The plaintiff alleges that owing to the carclcssness of the Transit employes she was knocked from a wagon while cross- ing the tidal canal bridge, in Alameda, and thrown underneath the car, sustain- ing injuries which resulted in the ampu- tation of a limb near thé thigh. The complaint further states that the bridge was too narrow to permit of the pass- ing of the wagon and street car, but that despite this fact the car bore down upon | tbe wagon and team at the rate of twen- ty-five miles on hour. MAYOR BARSTOW SIGNS FRANCHISE ORDINANCE Oakland Transit Consolidated Ob- tains Right to Extend Its Lines Toward New Ferry. OAKLAND, Sept. 6.—Mayor Barstow sigi the ordinance to-day granting the Oakland Transit Consolidated a franchise for the extension of its street railway lines to a point where they will form con- nections with the new ferry system that is being bullt at Fortieth street by the Oakland and East Side Raliway. Under the terms of the franchise the Oakland Transit will have the right to extend its lines along Twelfth street, Shattuck ave- nue and Adeline street. Fairchild, | United States Agricultural Explorer con- | nected with the Agricultural Department at Washington, visited the University of California Agricultural Experiment Sta- tion this week. He recently arrived frem Japan, where he has been conducting ag- ricultural -investigations and is en route for Washington. Dr. Fairchild created the department of agricultural explora- tion at Washington in 1897, and since that time has been traveling in all parts of the world gatherigg plants which can be | | raised commercially in the temperate and | torrid regions of the United States. He is | at present interested in transplanting bamboo to th's countiy and is certain that it can be raised here at great profit.
