Filcher of the State Board of Trade, after an absence of nine months in the Bast, the major portion of which was spent at the Californian ex- hbiit at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, returned last night, enthusiastic over the results of the display, yet glad to have escaped the rigors of the Eastern winter. Mr. Filcher brings joyful tidings to the people of the State. California earned the highest recognition of any State in the United States and carired off more honors than all the others combined. Gold, silver and bronze medals and certi- ficates of merit were awarded without number, and the complete record is a | wonderful tribute ‘to the diversified in- dustries of the State. Mr. Filcher sald: Everything was In our favor in Buffalo. We \occupied one-half the space in the big horti- cuttural byliding, besides having a space twelve by thirtyhwo feet in the mining building. Every fnch of space was used to the best pos- sible advantage and every industry was dis- played in the most attractive manner. Shortly after 2 o'clock yesterday after- noon Willlams, who is a well dressed yoyng fellow, visited A. Devoto's fruit storé at Powell and Green streets and asked the proprietor to direct him to the Fishermen's Wharf. Devoto stepped out of his store and showed the stranger the nearest way to reach the wharf. After profusely thanking Devoto Wii- llams left. As Devoto returned to the store he was told by a customer who had entered the place while he was conversing with the well-dressed stranger (hat he had seen a short man walk behind the counter and take thé contents of the cash drawer, amounting to $.
