DEL MONTE, CAL., Aug. 28.—The gayety of last week has continued with scarcely any ebatement during this week, and whai with verfeet weather, plenty of amusement, the ex- citement of expectation in regard to the ten- nis tournament and last, but 1 no respect least, the fact thut there are actually more men than women staying here, the visitors at this pleasant hostelry wear a habitual expres- sion of unalloyed content. Of course, when the guests are happy the management is %;lel]:l!ed and “all goes merry as a marriage it Del Monte is probably the only resort in America at the present time where the men are in excess ot the women, and in conse- quence the summer girl here has an embar- rassment of riches in the shape of devoted cav- aliers. That she is making good use of her time and opportunity goes without ililug. The chief amusements of the week, aside from the tennis tournament, has been bowi- ing, and there are some wonderiully expert players nere, among the ladies particularly. Miss Shepherd. Miss Brodie, the Misses Tobin, Mrs, Ryer, Mrs. Fowles and Mrs. Worden Todd must be awarded the palm among the lady players. A towling touruament was held again this week, Herman Oelrichs presenting the prizes as before, and Mrs. C. E. Worden and . F. Ryer winning them. Golf continues to hold its own, but the topic of interest during the week has been the in- vitation doubles tennis tournament which is played for tne first time on the Del Monte courts. The charming young fiancee is an unusually accomplished young lady, and during her brief residence in this City has been prominently identified with many of the leading literary organizations.
