DOCTOR HADE A TARGET OF HIMBELF Dramatic Scene in a Shoot- ing Gallery on Eddy Street. George J. Moore Fires a Bullet Into His Breast That May Prove Fatal. He Is the Son of the President of the Pacific Mutual Life In- surance Company. George J. Moore, 605 O'Farrell street, son of the president of the Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Company, chose a dra- matic way of attempting to end his life last night. During the evening he engaged a horse and bug:y at the Nevada stables on Mar- ket streer, and, after driving around to several saloons, he hitchied the horse to | a post on Eddy street, near Mason, oppo- site the shooting-gallery of W. A. Brad- ford, 36 Eddy street. 7This was about 11:30 o'clock. He walked across the street to the shoot- ing-gallery and throwing a 25-cent piece | on the counter asked Bradiord to give him tickets for the amount, as he wanted to try his prowess with a revolver. Bradford loaded a 22-caliber, single-bar-. reled target pistol and handed it to Moore. Moore rested the barrel across his n, as if to take aim at the target, but the muz- zle pointed almost straight at Bradford, and he told him to be careful. Without saying a word Moore turned the muzzle upon himself and fired, the bullet entering his ieft obreast and taking a downward course into his abdomen. With a groan Moore sank to the floor. The suot did notattracta crowd at first, but when it got noised abroad that a man bad shot bimself at the shooting gallery men and women quickly gathered. Policeman Ring was not far away, and he was soon upon the scene. He tele- phoned for the patrol wagon, and Moore was taken to the Receiving Hospital. Dr. Fitzgibbon proved for the buliet, but could not find it. The doctor thought that the bullet had perforated the intes- sines, and if so the wound would prove dangerous, Moore was very reticent as to why he shot himself, but he begged that his wiie should be sent for. He said hisname had been in the papers before on the occasion of his shooting at his brother and he did not like notoriety. Mrs. John Zermon Erings Suit for a Divorce, Alleging Extreme Cruelty. SAN RAFAEL, Car, July 24 —Mrs. John Zerman of Mill Valley filed a sen- sational complaint to-day in a suit for a divorce. She accuses her husband of alt manner of cruelty. Frequently, she al- leges, he slapped her face, and at one time he stamped upon her while she lay on ihe floor. In May, 1897, he was de- termined to kill her and choked her into insensibility and leit the house, believing her to be dead. Alterward she appealed to peace officers for protectlon. In June, says the complaint, Zerman seized a hatchet and attempted to kill her. Sheran and he gave chase, but she eluded him and did not return until his rage nad spent itsell. On account of ti-ese cruel acts she has been compelled to seek a home with ber wother in San Francisco. She asks for alimony and wishes her hus- band to appear on Monday, August 2 before Judge Angelotti and show caus: why he should not pay it to her. She asks for the custody of their boy, Percival. Zerman will, it is stated, file counter charges of a siill more sensational char- acter and mention the names of some Mill Vailey people who, he believes, have ruined his home and caused nis wife to bring these charges against him in an effort to sccure a divorce. gt o PACIFIC GEOVE CONCER1S. annual Chan sembly Ends in @ Ewrst of dietody.
