The first of these came from J.W. and V. Cook and stated that Sam Brown, while on the river fishing, had been fired upon by persons in ambush on the shore. Several bullets struck the boat, but the occupants escaped unhurt. A number of fishermen near Clifton desired protection from the Sheriff.
