City Attorney Connell in speaking of the matter statoed that forbearance had ceased to be a virtuo and that the Board of Public Works bad taken tho right course in the premises. 1f Squires would not do the work, the board should put on a force of men and charge the expense to Squires and his bondsmen, Then, if ho felt so disposed, Bquires could go into the courts where all_differences coula be adjudicated at an | early date. In tbe meanume, il Squires stiil insisted upon throwing up his contract, the city council could advertise for bids for street cleaning, Mr. Connell did not think thero was any reason why the streots should remain in their prosent filthy condition for any great length of time. The work could proceed, by the ex nse being charged against Squires and his ndsmen until a new contract would bo made, and after that thenew contractor would tako care of matters C. . Squires sent in bills amounting to 7,000 for extras and overwork in street sweeping matters. ln his communication ho stated that the city owed him $1,936 on the 1890 and 6,000 on the 1501 contract. The bills, he stated, were for streets swept and re- jected and also for work performed under tho 10 per centclause of his contrac ‘The wholo matter was referred chairman, to confer with City Attor neil and report to tho board” the city buity, Boird of Fublic Works will cause be don to the e SONE That Tired Feeling 1s often the forerunuor of serious {llness, which may be broken up 1fa good tonic hike Hood's Sarsaparilla is taken in season. G. Brown, the young broker who has just fled, are anuounced to be, as far as vet dis- covered, ns follows: Canada Permanent, $6,000; Wostern Canaaa, $4,312; Union Loan and Savings company, §,500; Freehold Loan and Savings compuny, #1,000: Western As- surance company, §,000: British Cauadian, €2,000; London and Canada Loan and Sav- ings company, £3,200, making a total of §25 663 Tho forgeries in every case wero that of a power of attorney, by which Brown was enavled to transfer tho stock to his own mname. The names forged include those of hus father and brother. A mecting was held ut the Canadian Per- manent company of the heads of various loan compauies victimized and it was decided toat once take logal steps to bring Brown back. The forgeries conimenced as r back as February, 1860, but they were concenied by various “manipulations. The biggest fraud of all was that of tho forgery of powers of attoruey of Judge Senkler of St. Catherines, by which Brown transierred fifty snaves of the Bank of Moutreal to bimself, "It was tho accidental aiscovery of this by Judge Seuk- ler that brought to light the whole system of fraud of which Brown had long been guilty. The banks which principally advancod money on the forged powers of attorney were the Standard and Quebec, wbo say this will result in a series of legal disputo a: who 1s liable for the amounts involved, extensive naturo of the business dono by young Brown may be inferred from the fact that ono month alono his bank account amounted to £ In ono day he sent 806,000 in orders to’ Chicago for wheat aloue, Elect LifMeultics Trouble—News from the Islands, oxoLuLy, April 7.—Honolulu has recov- erod from the excitement which prevailed at Settled Without the timo the steamer owing to the finding of a barricade of sand bags o ound the royal palace. D, April 14, ~[Special to Tur Bre.|—The stock intereste, including norses, cattic and sheep of the Black Hills | and reservation ranges, never were in better | condition, and the outlook 1s docidedly flat- | tering, Up tothe timo of the last big storm | all rango stock was in prime condition, and | 881 is now known po y that the storm | did very little damage it can be said that | the toss during the past winter has been almost nothing. Regardine cattlo it may bo said that 1arge numbers aro being shipped in from Texas, They aro 2-year-olds, and being kept on the South Dakota ranges two wears will be shipped to Omaha, Chicago and other castern markets, Among the purchasos made by stockmen of Rapid City and sur. rounding country during tho past two weeks the following was learned: Sheialey Cattle company, 5,000; Fred Holcomb, 1,50: Peter Dubamel, 1,500; Stenger & Humphrey, 2,500; Maurice Kelliher, 3,000: Driscoll Bros., 17,000, All except the last will be shipped by rail. Other purchases and shipments within the next thirty days will bring the total up to 60,000, The fact that 2-year-old steers can bo bougnt in Texas, shipped 1,500 miles by rail, kept on the range for two years and then be'reshipped to eastern points and sold at a good profit—and this has been an important branch of the cattle business bero for several years—isasufiicient recommenda- tion of tho South Dakota ranges. The horse interests are ulso in good condi- tion, a aumber of recent shipments of range horses to eastern and southern points—even as r away as Birmingham, Ala.—having netted theowners handsome profits. Within ashort time I Steel, the Farmingdale Land and Live Stock company and tho Gam men Live Stock company will each make large shipments of fully matured rango bred horses. The standurd of range horses has for yoars past been constantly raised, until now tho horsemen ave shipping out animals which readily bring good prices in easter markets. The sheep men, as far as could be learned, are doing well, but very few sheev are being shipped in and no now sheep ranches havi been started recently. Though, as stated, those who are 1n 1t are doing well and though this is ndmittedly a very good sheep coun- try, tho business does not grow very rapidly and is not as populor as the cattie and borse business, The horse and cattle men were hero first, they are numerous and have large interests and naturally desire to keep the sheen industry as limited and within as small an aves as possible. MAJORITY OF THE COUNCIL NECESSARY OMATA e v Not Re-Elected Prestdent of the Lincoln City Council and He Desires to Have the Matter Thoroughly Alr —~Loeal News, LaxcoLy, Neb,, Apnl 14.—[Speclal to The Bee. | —The frionds of Alderman Boehmer, who was defeated for re-cloction as president of tho Lincoln vity council by a majority of only one vote, are serivusly considering the matter of contesting the cicction of Alder man Brown to that position. I'uesday even- Ing, at the meoting at which Brown was clected, thero wero but thirteen councilmen present, Of these seven voted for Brown and six for Boohmer. The absent member was Smith of the venth ward. Boebmer's friends base their grounds for a contest upon the assertion that it re- quires a majority of all the members of tho council elected to choose a president, fnstead of a majovity of thoso present when the clec- tion takes place. Tho city attornoy has beon requested by Mayor Weir to look up the law upon tho matter and render an opinion at the next meeting of tho city couneil next Tues- day ovening. The importance of the matter lies in tho fact that in tho absence of tho mayor from the city the president of the city council becomes the ncting mayor, with no littlo responsibility upon his shoulders.
