The mercnants and business men of that quiet village have. for some time been in tho habit of leaving thoir letter boxes at the postoMic unlocked, simply ureing the knob a little to keep tho doors shut, Thieves having observed this took ad vantage of tho oarclessness and systomati cally and regularly relieveda the boxes of their contents, Tho postmaster finally set a watch upon the boxes that had been robbed, and last Wednesday evening he caught a 19-year-old boy named Andrews in tho act of steal ing letters from one of tha boxes. The lad was arrested and lodged in Jjail. Ho told a curious story to which Lo still adheres. He sald that ho met a man in a billfard room under the hotel i the same block with the postoffice, who gave him 50 cents to go up to the postofiice ana get the mail out of threo boxes. Ho smd tho man explained to him how the doors couid be opened by simply turning the knob. Ho dia ot know the ‘man but supposed he had o right to get the mail in tho boxes described Young Androws was lodged in the small calaboose at David City to awat the arrival of the doputy United States marshal. Deputy Hill went out to bring the prisonerto Omaha, but found, when he renched Davia City, that he had broken jail. Parties had pried open tho door of tho calaboose and the lad was gone. The deputy marshal finally traced the boy to the howe of a friend soven miles in tho country and brought him to Omans. Young Andrews still adheres to the story of having received 50 conts for taking the lotters, Ho was arraigned yesterday beforo the prosecuting attorncy and stoutly declared that ho had told the whole ~ truth in the matter. Ho said it was the first time he had taken anything out of tho boxes, and ho would not bave done it but for tho fact that ho supposed the man who gave him the money was pertectly honest, and ho simply thought ho was runming an errand for tho gentleman, Attorney Baker was thoroughly convinced that there was a large-sized African some- where in the vicinity of the David City postoffico who “has been hiring boys to commit these thefts, A searching investigation will bo madoe before any further stops are taken to punish young Androws. Hels an innocent looking couutry lad, who has lived in town oniy about two months, and if he has misrepresented the affairhe is one of the best actors oxtant, for he made everyvody believe his story.
