New York, March 1.—The coal stocks, after their sharp advance of yesterday, showed @ somewhat reactionary tendency this morning. The first prices were only slightly changed, al- though Chicago gas was down 1 per cent. Wheeling, Lake Erie preferred and Delaware and Hudson were strong «pots, aud each re- corded 15, per cent advance. Delaware, how- ever, soon declined 1 per cent, whisky trust DY per cent, and Chicago gas % in the early trad- ing. New England was the feature of the dealings. It advanced to 54 from 51%. The rest of the tnarket sympathized fractionally, but did not rewin the advance. At 11 o'clock except ine few cases the changes in prices were slight. DISTRICT 1N CONGRESS, ‘THE DISTRICT SURVEYOR. The district surveyor is the subject of a letter written to Senator McMillan by A. H. Semmes of this city. Mr. Semmes designates the present condition of affairs a serious inconvenience. He wants a surveyor for the District who will be paid a regular salary; who shall havea sufficient number of assistants, also salaried. He says the delays now are very annoying and refers to one case where he gave an order for certain surveying & year ago, but the order has never yet .received any ‘attention. He thinks the surveyor isa trifle too independent and wants him placed under the control of the Commissioners. Mr. Semmes also si te that the surveyor be placed under bonds, #o that when he erroneously lays out lines ‘re- course may be had against his bondsmen. Fixed charges for surveying would also be desirable. To EXTEND THIRTY-SEVENTH STREET. The extension of 37th street is provided for in bill introduced today by Senator Gibson of Maryland. Ina preamble the bill represents that that the tracks of the Georgetown and Tenley- town railway occupy so much of High (82d) street that there isa very marrow space on either side of the tracks, and that many accidents have occurred ‘by reason of the electric cars frightening horses along that street; that 37th strect has during the past year (without cost to the District) been opened from T street northwardly to Back street to a int about 1,000 feet from the Tenleytown road. The bill appro- priates 10,000 for condemnation and yurchase of ground on the line of 37th street tween Back street and Tenleytown road. ‘The sum of $10,000 additional is also appro- priated to and improve the street be- tween T street and Teuleytown road. ‘The petition which accompanies the bill is signed by eighty-seven prominent residents of the city, principally of town. WEST WASHINGTON TRACTION RAILWAY. Senator Gilson of Maryland this afternoon introduced the bill to incorporate the East and West Washington traction railway of the Dis- trict.
