OIF With Som ment at the Close , T11,, Feb. 20.~Wheat was dull, but 4c over the closing figuro of Satur- day. Themarket was Inclined to weakness fora tinie. The higher opening was attrib- uted chiefly to colil weather in the northwest Light snow was reported in the northern part of the winter wheat belt, with snow threat- ened clsewhere. The recelpts in the north- were unusually heavy. The early cables notencouraging as London and Liverppol quoted dull and unchanged, and as the seabourd murkets were wlso slow and a large nerease in the visible supply generally Jooked for, there was freo sclling for a timo with a sageing market, which carried prices down to Saturday's 1ast figures, but the de- ©lino loft a good profit for some of the shorts here, Prices gradually went up 1o from the lowest point. Good buying orders for New York ac- count assisted In the advane, but perhaps the strongest factor was the unexpested re- sult in the yisible supply statement, which, fnstead of an Inorease, scored a decrease. Tho Inte private cables were also niore encour- agloz. Milmine-Bodman, Baldwin and Pard- Fidgo were the ieading sellers most of the day, although 1t was reported that W. Feb, 20.—The stock market opened the new week with a renewal of the oxcitement over the conl stocks, and groat activity In those shares was aguin accom= panied by phenomenal movements In their process, which were all In_ the upward dir tlon. The rest of the market sympathized to A lmited extent, but Now England and New York Central were the only ones to score any material fmprovement from the rise. Dela- ware & Hudson was the center of interest at this time. At the best prico it was up over7per cent and Lackawanna nearly as mucli, while Jersey Central rose -over 4 per cent and Reading was put to above 60. There Was only one weuk point in the list and _that aistillers, which continued to decline slowly but steadily. while the other indus- trials wore firm though quiet. The excite- ment in the market gradually dicd away though there was comparatively lurge trad ingin the lnte dealings fn the evening up_ of contr s put out during the day and the Hquidation of long accounts by the taking of profits on_the udvance. The ovening was stronz ctive and unusunlly heavy by inz by London houses cr ed a bullish fed ing which was quickly reflected in pu i for the long account and materlal advances. The intorests in the coal stocks, however, soon overshadowed the restof the market and the heavy advances in these shares completely dwarfed” the heavy movement in_other shares. The improvement in values, however. was checked temporarily by the announcement of the taking of gold for export, but the check was of short duration and the ndvance was soon resumed. Reali- tions also held the list down in the last Nour. but the market closed firm and hopeful ator neur the best prices of the day. Cordage, 1y per cent: Now England, 15 per cent, and Union Pacific and Canada Southern 1 per cent each. The interest in the bond list was not so marked today, although the activity in the Reading run ihe total up to 2,010.000. but With the ex- cevtion of a rise of per cent in Kansas City and Omaha firsts there was no markea move- ment in the entiro list, A firm temver pre- vailed, however, and advances are more nuni- crous than losses tonight.
