A. Burke, Olty Audltor, ANOTHER CROOK, Oaught Going Through one of the Rooms of the 8t. Jo House, Total. Yesterdsy morning (at an early hour there was a lively sensation at the St. Jo house on Masin street. Mrs. Heltman, the wife of one of the proprietors, arose at at an earller hour than usual, to see about the breakfast, one of the help be- Ing sick, and soon after having occasicn | der, to return to her room, was surprised to find aman there. The fellow had her pooket-book In his hand, and asshe came into the room he threw this down, her esrrings also dropping from his band onto the floor, He had taken a few dollars out of the pocket book, Mrs Heltman grabbed bim and he gave her quites tussle. She call- ing loudly for her husband, the fel. low trying to choke her, He broke away from her before help reached her and ran down the rear stairway, and after making several attempts to jump over the fence, pulled off eome of the boards and escap- ing ioto the alley, run over to Worth street and down to Fourth, closely fol- lowed by several persons, who captured him on Story street, He was tarned over to the police and taken to the sta- tlon, where he gave his name as Tom Wilson. He denled that he fntended to steal anything, but said that he had slept at the hotel all night, in anadjacent room and had wandered into the room by mis- teke, Hls story was qulte lacklng In the semblance cf trath, he was sent to juil to awalt » hearing, which will take place this morning. —— Another of Frainey's Cases, At a late hour Thursdsy night Officer O'Brien found a fellow named John Browo,’for whom he had been looking for ® lonz time, claiming that he was one of the telo which attacked him on Main street some months ago, when he was trylng to take them to jail for being drunk, Instead of taking the man to the clty jsll and having bim brought before the court for which there ls provided » judge with & regular walary, this police «ificer evidently pre- ferred to give Fraivey a chance to earn THE DAILY BEE COUNCIL BLUFFS ---SATURDAY MAY 2, 1885 1 some fees, and 8o filed two informations before him, not being content with one. One of the charges was ‘' alt and bat- tery with intent to do bodlly harm,” and the other was for reslating an officer Brown was kept In the county jail untll yesterday afternoon, and when he was brought {nto court he wisely concladed to take a change of venue, and the cnse of assault was sent to Justice Scharz, The other case was dlsmissed, bat the county will be expeot- od to pay the costs, #o that the preclons time of the justice will not have been spent In vain, The case sent to the other justice has been continued until Monday, the defencant giving bonds for his appearance. If the police, of which the mayor is the head, are to ran thelr cases Into Frainey’s court, the policecourt might as well be done away with, as it i too expensive and not ornamental enough, —— PERSONAL.
