THE DAILY BEE-~SATURDAY, MAY 2. 1885. A GRAND SUCCESS. Smith's First Great Shopping Excarsion 1) Omaha This Mornicg. Eleven Oars Orowded to the Utmost ~ Boenes Along the Line, * Yesterday morning the special excursion traln on the B, & M. which had been ohartored for the exclusive use of the patrons of Smith's dry goods store, ar- rived In the clty. It Is mafe tomay that never before in the history of the com- merolal enterprises of this city, of what- soever description or magnitude, has any transaction taken place which could dls- play to better advantage, the spirlt of gluh aud enterprise of any buslness firm, 'ho event ia one long to be remembered, as marking an Important era in the history of local business Interes! The excursion started at Lincoln, the traln being one of eleven cars. Passen- qers were taken on, however, from Has- tings and other points in that locality. The crowds kept pushing onto the train as each successive atation was passed, men, women and children of all patterns, nizes and ages presonting themselves for passsgs. By the lime the trsin had reached the third or fourth station the other side of Omaha every one of the eleven cars was packed and jammed, It belng impossible to obtain even standing room. Oonsequently for the last few statlons no stops were made, hundreds turning away disappolnted. ‘When the traln arrived at the depot, itis faic to say, there was presented the sight of an exoursion party whioh for size has not been equalled in mavy s yoar. The crowd of ladies, gentlemen, with their youthfals, actuslly extended from the depot to Smith’s store, at 1307 Farnam street, and In the ‘‘grand parade” there must surely have been 1,000 peopla. All day long the mam- moth emporium of the dry goods business has been thronged with pur- chasers, and the day is a red-letter one in the history of the enterprising estab- lishment. Those Omaha people who rely upon the restaurants for their meals where somewhat astonished to fiad every one of them crowded by the excurslon- ints, whose appetites had been doubly and triply whetted by the beautiful May ride. In fact, the restaurant men say that if they had been apprised of tho magnitude of the excursion beforehand, they would have doubled thelr facilities for the supply of the hungry throng. The Importance of this plan for throwing business into the commerclal circles of -our clty can not be overestimated, It will enable pecple to do thelr trading in Omaba without a cant of cost for trans. portation; 1t will bring buyers to the clty, who would probably otherwlse do their trading at some town with inferlor busl. ness establishments; and above all it will 80 revolutionizs present business methods that it will give the people of this portlon of Nebraska easy communi- cation with Smith’s great dry goods store, under whose ausploes these excurslons are to be glven. All honor for the perfect suscess of the present excurslon must be accorded to Mr. J. F. Allen, the gentleman with whom rests the credit of the origination and execution of the scheme. HIS MISSION WEST. Why Sheriff Grebe is Absent 60 Long In Wyoming. The Laramle Boomerang of April 27th, contains the following item which 1s of interest to Omaha people: “Bheriff Grebe, of Omaha, came from the west this morning on the Atlantic ex- press and stopped over a fow hours, dur- which time he visited the Boom- erang headquarters and pralsed thelr neatness and convenience. He af- torwards called to see United States Marshal Schultger and Clty Marshal Foe and left on a spec'al train for Cheyenne. Mr. Grebe has been absent from home for just s month, searching for a red- handed Nebraska criminal who is sup- posed to have taken refuge In the unset- tled portlon of Wyomiog known as the Meeteese country. He was hot on the fellows trall, but lost It agaln tn the lybrints of that hilly re- gion, Should he hereafter succeed in cspturing his man it will be one of the biggest thinge in the criminal annals of the west, but at present details and names are suyprossed in the interest of justice, The officer found traveling In the Meoteese country exceedingly diffi- cult, and felt like glving a war whoop when he got back and onse more got & glimpse of a locomotive and other evi- dences of clvllization, He says he w treated very hospltab'y by the boys up there but he prefers to live near the aunts of men."” BLEW OUITHE GAS, Also His Life—An Uofortunate Young Man Expires in a Room at the Canfield House, Thuradsy evening a young man entered the Canfield house, and registering himse'f asFried. Stelberg, of,Rapid Oity, 111, was awlgned to Room 51, When about to retire the night clerk, who noticed that he was rather green, asked him If he knew how to turn off the gas, to which the stranger replled that he did not, He was, therefore, shown how, and was then conducted to his room. At 10 o'clock yesterdsy mornlng the chambermald = loquired whe was occupylng 61, a8 she could notget in to do her work, =nd there wi trong smell of gas lsu- Ing from the room. The clerks of the house at once investigated the matter, and belng ubable to get in, they kicked the door open, and sure eneugh found the room full of gas and Mr, Stelberg lylng In bed unconsclons from the effects of it. The windows were thrown open, and an attempt was made to revive him. Meantime Dr, Leoe was summoned, and soon arrived, All day he worked dlligently, faithfully awisted by Col. Savage; like- wise the owners and employes of the house, but their labor was in valn, At 16 minutes to 8 o'clock last evening the unfortunate young man brea‘hed his last. 0nlg one time during the day,snd that was about 2 o'clock, were any signs of returning conclousncss indicated, and then his pulse seomed to grow strcnger, but only fcr a short t'me, Afcer he had custodlan at the government buflding at |In Tue Three Negro Women, Clara Thomas and Minole Howard, ar-|llc ought to know that the animosity rested night before last for robbing | Which is entertained by the sporting edi- Conrad Hassler out of $500, were bound over yestorday atternoon, by Judge|on pecuniary grounds.
