THE RIVEH MYSTEHY The Body Funnfl m the River N Bellovae Partly Acconated For, Supposed to be the Body of a Young Bohemian who Disappoared Last January, Since the finding of the body in the | Missouri river, near Bolle vue last Friday, thore has boen a great deal of talk as to who the murdered man was and when he came to his un- timely end. All has ended in talk, no more was known than at first, but now a Ber roporter, after making careful in- quiries, is of the opinion that what seoms to be a dark and unfathomable mystery can be accounted for and the body can be identified if seon by friends in this city. @4 The readers of Tiie Beg will romon. ber that an account Was given in the col- umns of this paper of the strango disap- pearanco of a young man of this city by the name of Matthias Free, on the night of January 17th last. He was a Bohe- mian and on the date mentioned he left this city, aftor a bal’, to accompany sey- eral women across the river to Council Bluffs. Since that time nothing has been heard of him and no trace as to his whereabouts could be found. Ho was dressed about as the body which was found at Belleveu was said to bo attired, he had auburn hair and_was about twenty-five years of age. More than this, ho had loft the Austrian army in 1883 and had his discharge papers with him. His place of residence was given a8 Alspossekan, Germany, The young man who disappeared from this city had come from St. Postrekov. A prominent Bohemian in this city says that in their language the St. means old, hence trans- lated in German it might easily have been written Alspossekan, Physicians say tho body, even had it been thrown into the water lnst January, might have been preserved, providing that it was fastened to something near the bottom ot the river and closo to a spring, protected from the air and ihat it might have become detached only a very short time prior to the finding of it. The address of the man in the mem- orandum book tallies very closely with that of a prominentBohemian who liv the number designatedin St.Joseph. T thing which is most puzziing is the pro- gramme of the Theatre Comique ‘‘of re- cent date.” The questionnow arises *how recent was the date of that programme?’ Nothing has been said further than it was of recent date. Somo might con- sider any date in the year 1884 of recent date whilo others might infer that it was within the last few weeks. At any rate the matter is worthy of more careful investigation and in case the body was exhumed it might be that some of the friends of the young man who so myster- iously disappeared from this city might bo able to identify it as being the same. Then to ascertain who the women were found recently, under his .wagon Creek, the taam, in a hall starve being discovored tad to the w Tt «irmisos that & companion team doted the man and drove off with condition nd polo. the 20th, Goorge Metoalf wis de ocrately shct and killed by William Maloney. Of courso with a scant supply of bulls the | ealf crop is sure to bo short and the profiis cut down in the same or even greater ratio. Wheraver bulls are allowed to Tram with the herd, the wear and tear cn them is enormous and rapid, and thoy | will perhaps serve the same cow (wunu times during a single period of heat, re sulting in but one calf and doing thom- selves more harm than they ordinarily would in siring twenty calves from as many difleront cows in anything like a soasonable time. It soems to bo a bull's nature to stay with the same cow for a or sometimes two days and in the meantime several others that should be | served aro wholly neglectod, and espoc- ially is this the case 1 the | usiest season of warm weather, when their powers are most severely taxed. With the poor handling the rango systom of breeding necessitatos the net results from a bull's servico can scarcely be more than twenty- fivo per cent of what it would be wero | he kopt in control and the amoun® and |times of servico regulated by proper oversight. Much of theranchman’ssuccessis bound to depend on his having a liberal abund- ance of vigorous bulls with his herd at tho right time; firstly that his cows may bo bred, and secondly that the bulk of thoeir calves may come at so nearly the same time as to make the young stock as largoly uniform as possible, 1t {s uni- orwity, particularly uniform excellence, that attracts the buyer and braces him up to put on tho extra dollar per head when closing a purchase, and losing sight of this has cost many a good fellow the lit- tlo margin that so ofton divides success from failure, The Live Stock Indicator believes that tho best investment many ranchmen could mako would bo the increase of their bull stock at least 33 percent in numbors, There is not one chance in ten thousand of having too many whilo there are unquestionably plenty of herds that do not have half enough and it is the poorest sort of economy to eithor practice or encourago when bulls aro so ¢ | abundant and low priced as at present, The argument used by somo is, 48 a well-posted contemporary puts it, that ‘“‘the ranchman contonds ho has bulls enough for his own cows, but that his neighbors are derelict, and that he does not propose to buy extra bulls for his neighbor’s hord, There are a good many men mean enough to allow theie cows to bo served by the bulls belonging to 1 { others; not realizing that they aro pursu- ing a very short-sighted policy; not only robbing ,their neighbor of actual value, but curtailing their own profits by hav- ing more cows than bulls to serve them. A bull gets about 20 to 20 calves a year with perfect ease. Figure what a calf is worth to yon, and mulnply 1t by 25, The ealculation will convinen anv man that he can get 8 to b improved bulls for the sum he loses in ono year by haying one bull less than he; should.”— Kansas City Stock Journal.
