COLLARS OF THE BL The California House Landlord Did Not Rob Murphy—Ten Days for not Going Barefooted. BOUND ARD, guidance of COA! In the superior court yesterday morn- ing further evidence was taken in the caso of Taeschler, the proprictor of the California house, charged with stealing $30 from a drunken patron of his bar. Taeschler swore that the money which the man was carelessly dropping about consisted of a $10 bill and a $10 gola piece, aird that he had taken care of it for him, as he was too drunk to take care of it himself. When the man Murphy demanded the money, he offered it to him, but Murphy demanded $22 and would not take the $20. The reason Taeschler denied to Officer Morse that he had the money was that he did not know Morse, but when Chief Field came there knew him and gave up the money. re were two other witnesses who tes- titied that when Taeschler picked up the money he called on them to see it count- ed, and there was only $20. The judge discharged him. A middle aged man giving his name as C. Evans, and who has been of la e doing come carpenteriug on the Presbyterian church, had not got sufficient piety from contact with the sanctuary to prevent him from indulging in the ways of the world, He got a little too much drink aboard, and while in this condition snatched a pair of shoes from Sullivan & Fitzgerald’s store, Mr, Sullivan gave him chase, caught him, and the shoes, Atter giving him a lect and receiving assurance of repentance on the part of the fellow, he let him go, but the ofticers afterwards arrested him, and thought best to prosscute. He pleaded guilty to potit larceny, and was sentenced to ten days in jaid. —— A Call K Counci Buurrs, IA., August 27, 1883, —We the undersigned colored voters of Council Blufts and of Pottawattomie county, dousk for the appointment of Charles Curtis as a delegate to the Louis- ville convention, to be held in Louisville, Ky., September 24, We being in favor of anti-prohibition, do sign our names, and voto for Charles Curtis to represent the anti-prohibition club in the said con vention: Joseph Lowis, Frank Hurper, David Botts, Floyd Cozaing John Hayos, Osear Johnson, Jucob W ashington, Homer Jackson, Jumes Brown, There will be a big show of thorough. bred cattle at the fair here. The announcement that the slaughter o8 unlicensed canines would begin Sep- tember 1, caused a number of the delin- +quents to step to the front yesterday, and get brass tags for their dogs’ collars. Still there are less than thirty dog nses taken eut in all, and there must be more dogs than that in the city—a fow more, ) Nine Herdics bid goodbye to Council Bluffs yesterday and were l{lippud to Des Moines, where W. Culbertson, / A Martin Flies Away Leaving His Creditors and Wife Behind, His Disappearance Caused by Finan- cial Troubles, John Martin, whose name has become somewhat familiar as proprietor of the Chicago plumbing works, on Pearl street, has disappeared suddenly end mysteri- ously. The boy, Harvey Harmer, who was in his employ, and who attended to the store, while Martin was attending to outside business, says that the last hv saw of his employer was on Saturday after- noon last, when he said he was going out to draw $26 with which to pay some little bills, promising that on his return he would pay the boy off. He did not come back, and has not been seen since. It is understood that Martin has got involved financially, and that he was unable to meet _his obligations as fast as they became due, and concluded®to giveup the struggle. His stock is said to be fully covered by a mortgage, and his plumbing tools he seems to have taken with him. He has lett behind him, besides mourning creditors, a wife, who is in rather a pecu- linrly distressing condition financially. She and her husband were lately arrested on the charge of maltreating a little child they had adopted. The child was given back to its father, and the court, while it acquitted Martin, found Mrs. Martin guilty, and fined her 825, and costs, the whole amount being over $40, Time was allowed for her husband to get the money, bui he has never paid, and as she has been left without means, she is liable to be taken on the unpaid fine and placed in jail. ~Atleastshe fears this, though under the circumstances more leniency may be shown her. It is said that she is left withoutany means of support and she is comparatively a stranger here, she and her husband v ing been here only since last winter. Martin is said to be an excellent work- man, and it seems that he was getting business enough to have enabled him to pull out of any financial troubles which he might have had, but his nerve appar- ently has given out. Just how much money he took with him, or the extent of his indebtedness, is not known, but there scems no other plausible reason for inun- cial embarrassment, | ———— Prairie chickens and A.
