Oaa has travapired in this city within the past fow days, tho romantic fl\wvor of which is undoubted and uuevrpsssed even by fictitious {ustances, and which av present forme the leading topis of gossip on Arbor Hill, 7The facts as nee: as can bo stated at present ave as follows: A year ago last December, Sergesnt Wenrick, of the regular army, waa stationed at o military post in Mon- tana with Lis company, his wife as a matter of course living with him at the poat when he was not in active eervice, In the same company was a fellow sergeant named Davis, who was Wenrlek’s chum, so to speak, and shared his confidence, as they had shared darger in many an Indian fight and scout among the hills, Davis, sc- cording to Wenrick, was a brave and manly young man who had won his sergeant’s stripes through merit, both in the camp and field. In recognition of some valuablo service he had ren- dered, Wenrlck was offered the priv— ilege of a three m-nths’ furlough in which to visit his friends in the east, if he so desired. He accepted it, and shortly before Carlstmas started east- ward. He had friends in this olty, or at least his wife had, but stoppages along the route and places in this state deferred thelr arrival here until Feb- ruary, Here they spent about two weeks. The friends of the couple gave them hospitable welcome, and uearly every evenlog they were ln- vited out to this or that house, whers the evening was spent in urqualified enjoyment. Of course friends of the entertalners were invited to meet them, and among the latter at several of the houses to which the couple were invited, was a most charming ard agreeably young lady. She manifested a lively interest In the sergeant's story of his experiences In the far weet, the lifein camp and the encounter withIndians. It was but natural that the sorgeant should mentlon In his nar- ratives the name of his comrade Davls and comment on his bravery, manliness and othor good qualities. The sergeant noticed the malden' interest in his comrade and perhaps thought ‘‘Well, there is a chance to secure him a wife who will prove a treasure,” At any rate when it be- cawe time for him to return to Mon- tana, he departed bearing with him the young malden’s address, which he had eurreptitiowsly obtalned, On roaching his post, he evidenily aroused Sorgeant Davis' futerest In the falr unknown by his description of her charms and the interest she had plainly shown In the account of his adventures, At any rate the of Sergoant Daviy' life, so sth and uninterrupted betore, was distarbed, His dreaws wore filled with vitfons of the unknown ledy 2,000 wiles anay, and provided with the addrecs he at length mustered up courage to wrlte a few lines, couched in proper and manly terms, in which he mentioned what he had heard of her from hls comrade, closing with the solicitatlon for a reply, It ls difficalt to imaglne what the lady's feelings were on recelving the letter, but it is sufficlent to know that a reply was sent, and a correspondence an, Thr«’mgh the medium of pen nndklnk friendship was formed, Thelr feel. ings and tastes were found to tual. Finall changed, and the feellngs which had thus far possessed them developed Into one of & warmer naturo, As a matter of fact they fell In love with each other, and when a month or two since the gallant sergeant offored her his hand and heart it was accepted In the samo epirlt in which the offsr was wade, By the next mail came a coatly ocgagement ring, which the maiden now wears, Last week a leter was recelved from him anueunclng that his time had explred and he wonld at ouce start for the enst to clalm his brid alroady exchanged with the ruptial tie. A SECOND LEADVILLE. A New Mining Lamp in Colorado that Will Have Twenty Thousand People in a Few Weeks. 8t.. Louis Republican Mr Joseph Mulhall, just retarned from Colorado, speaks of a new mining camp just opened, which, in spitecf all obstacles, {s bound to become another Leadville in point of growth and notoriety. It Is the town of Oar- bonate, situated 10 Garfield county, Cblorado, in the midst of the Ute res- ervatlon, which was opened up t> the whites for settlement and occupation only last year. The new city, now scarcely known to the outside world, was lald out on the 8th day of last month, and now contains three or foar cabins, the domlcils of four or five men who have been at work all winter, It s said to contaln a pare lead of carbonates without walls on elther side, and runcing from 5) to 082 ounces of sllver, with 38 to 42 per cent of lead to the ton. The snow In that region is now from four to ten foet deep for eighteen miles in all directions, and the only way to get to the now El Dorado s on snow shoes, and blankets and provisions have to be carried over the crust in this way. And yet since the opening of the mines one thousand people have beon walting to go there, and already 347 lots have been sold at faom 850 to §250 aplece cash, Mr. Mulhall, with Mr. John Songer, of Denver, went to withiu elghteen miles of the epot, belng stopped by the snow at the Suda aprings or Roar- ing fork, where are the finest hot springs in the world. They found some twenty-five people already lo- cated about the springs, where they had eresced bathing tents, showlng the Inciplent stages of a great water. ing place, yet to be puffed into notice, for the benefit of suffering invaltds. Mr. Songer provided himself with snow shoes--1 long, slender shoo, not as wide as that In use by the Canadians and Indiaos of the east in the oarly days—with which he started over the snow crust of Carbonate camwp, but Me. Malhall would not ac- comwpiny hlm with this cumbrous mesus of locomotion. To people not used to snow shces their weight and unwleldiness, reqaleing a atraddle of tho legs, would soon produce fatigne and an insbihty to procesd, and the wearer would break down under the encumbronce, Mr. Malball staid elght days at the Soda sprloge, and wili raturn there again in a short time, when the trails will be opened through the snow. My, Songer has slnce been heard from, Hs traveled the distance on suow shoes, cirrying his blankets and provieions, He found everybody at Carbonate moving about oun snow shoes, which are an eseential part of the wearing apparel. He saw fouror five claims where work is golng on, bringlng out rich ssmples, and he far- ther noticed a number of men digging in the snow trylng to find locations, which they had made the provious year. Mr. Songer believes that in this new mining district genuine carbonate of apaylog grade will be found over a very extensive ares, and he proposes to return and ald the army of prospact- ors that will repair thither. No ex- cltement, not excepting Leadville, has more thoroughly aronsed the citizens of Colorado, and it is calcalated at least twenty thousand people will via- it the Colorado fields of Garfield county within the year. Mr, Malhall says that Carbonate camp is ninety-seven from Leadville, duae west, and twelve mlles from old Fort Dotiance. It Is twenty-five miles trom the mouth of Eagle river, which emptied Into Rooney fork. The site of these carbonates 1s 10,500 feet above the sea level. There fs, In additlor to the sllver mines, a bedy of coal that faces on the cliffs for thirty- five miles, This coal can bs seen In thick layers, from which large blocks have tumbled out. e REMEMBER THIS.
