BUFFALO COUNTY. The Live and Latent Wealth of Western Nebratka, The Principal Features of Kearney, and Other Matters, 8p cal Correapondence of Tun Bux Kransey, May 5 —Thia s becom- ing qaite popular as an agricaltaral district, with the present prospec:s more favorable than ever before for an abandant vegetable production, both wild and coltivated, When the re- port of Lowis and Clark Is considered one almost feels lo doubt of his owa vislon as he looks abont this otcs called ‘'Great American Desert,” and beholda luxurlant growth Cf vegeta uon nearly, or quite equal In value, to that of the New Eogland atates. There s an exhibition at Mr. Whiteakers' office in Kearney a collee- tion of grass snd cereals, all Buffalo county prodacts, that Is really worth the attention of the public. Hersare fouod every known varlety of tame grassee, together with all kinds of ralo and herbs usually fouod fo the gut zrloultaral distrlots, und in fally LIVE STOUK also rank foremost among the produs- tlon of Buffu o connty, There 1e now » large herd of neat cattle feedlow nesr Kearney that sstoulsh wll the beef men from the eas: that have sven them, Taere are in the herd sime twenty or more ateers taat welgh up wards of 2 000 pounds each, and such is the production of Batfalo county. Some farmeis In this sec lon re port enormous yields f wheat, corn and prtatues per acre, bat the maxi- mum yield is perhaps not above the average of other eastern coanties, but is no dount fally as good and will b materially lmproved atong the ltno «f| THE KEARNEY CANAL, whioh is now b.i.g vigorouely pushed forward and 18 expected to bs comple- ted this season, by which lands for & rading ot several miles can ke iir ted dartng Jaly sud A igosé, if neces #acy. The opening of the canal will open an avenue to commerce which will prove a valuable acqnisition to Kearney, In the way ot offarlng un- paralled indacements to manufacturers who may find it greatly to their advan- tago to locate here, where they will find the best water orivileges to be had in the couatry. Thls is one of the en- terprises that will eventually be fnitl: ated by the people of varlous sections of thestate to advantage. KEARNEY fs now having a real estate boom. Land that wae preemp‘ed in 1872 at 2 peracts, 1s wow selitna ut nearly £3,000 pur acre, or feam §250 to 8310 per residunr 1 (it ing is contenn! t i though but little has asy th sac meuced. thie Emigeation is now pouring into the | county at a rapid rate. It is estimated by real estate dealers that fully 3,500 people have settled in B iffalo county this spring, nearly all of them haviug permsnently located. Porhaps the most featurs in Kearnoy {a THE STATE REFORM SCHOOL, which is located two miles wost of town, and is in charge of Dr. Colilus. A visit to tho only institucion of the kind in Nabraska revesls to the minda of all parcies personally interosted & consoling 1dea of pure sitlsfaction. For tho bonefit of those of ourreadora who have little or no ioformation with the characeristics of a reform school I will dwell 1o detali concerning tho modus operandi of the iastitution. The state has now 320 scres of fiao land, with a three story brick building 48x53 feet on the ground. The base- ment is utilizsd ss kitchen, dining room and laundry. The second floor has an oftise, parlor and school room, while the third is used as a dormitory, being comtortably provided with good and clean beds, 1n two large rooms— having no oconnection—ono for the boys and one for the glrls. Of this farm there are 110 acres under cultivation, and it s expected that 50 to 100 acres more will bs broken this season. About fifteen acres are as a kitchen garden, aoted pablic the dinner hour, I was ocordially in. vited to a weat In the dining hail In the meantime the boys had arranged themselves In the hallway in doable file and all awaited o slgoal from the teacher, Mr, B, F. Ceatg, when they marched into the diuing room, each to his respeciive place, rtood & moment, untilall were in poeltion, then all seated thomselves a:oocd, and immediately repeated the Lord’s prayer In concert alond The dinner was good, fn fact much beiter than that ot the average hotel of Nabraska, though not ‘‘gorgeous,” bat clean, and wasapparently relished by all. Good order prevalls, and those of oar people who have children there mauy rest assuredthat they are in most osees much botter off than they would be ut home. THE LIVE 8T)CK belongiog to the state consists of one span of horses, twelve cows, recently provided; and about 100 head of fine begs, all ip good condition, and reem t)ne a great source of pleasure to some of the boys who have them ia charge, The site of the bullding fs one of the most picturesque that could have been procared, and is to ba decorated this season with 500 red cedar trees from Custer county, in addition to numerous flower beds which the chil- dren are allowed to cultivate to their own notion, each oune having bis or her owu plat, The idea of procaring evergreans that aro natives of this stutois a good one, a1d should be adapted more gen- erally throughout the state in o1dor to insara success. The prios belng only ten cvnts each places them in resch of every county home and snburban res!- dent, and if properly p uned they are olsssed amony the mos' ornameatal shrube, Buffao county has four trading points on the line of the railroad, the most important of whish 1s Kearney, the county sout, with a growing popn- lation now numbering about 3 000 Thin s also the terminas of one of the B. & M. branches. SHELTON The next in &1z3 has about 700 peo- pleaud Is a thriving little town, hav- ing every branch of industry repre- sented. Thls section of the couutry has recorded its shace of land sales and is still holding out inducements to lend seekera that are hard to match. GIBBON is vext lu aiz3, having nearly as many souls within her borders, Here to> o found in store everythiog required to make life enjoyable. The state Baptist seminary is located at Gibbon, and ls the pride of the town. Al though the iustitution is as yet in ite Infancy, it Js expected that a grist of foll fladged Baptists will be turned out in Jane next, ready for the pulplt. ELM CREEK, the foarth raliroad polnt, ls west of Koarney, and promises to become of some importance, though as yet it is not old enough to have establisked o respectable graveyard. Tho Hon. A, Loule has so traproved; his res- taurant parlors on Broadway that they are traly as elegant asany to be found, eveu in Chicago. They have been dee- orated In the highest art, and as all know, tho establishment could not be in the hands ot a more ekiliful caterer than Loute himself. Aside from the the marvelous beauty of the parlors, those who visit them may be sure of gottiog jast what they want and as they waat {t, whether it be a meal, a luncheon, lco cream and cake, or what not in that line. Ocrders for weddings and pacties ace promptly filled, and delivery wagons now make regular trips through the clty, and orders given to drivers will alzo be carefally attended to. Drop ia and see the little palace and taste its viands. Council Proceedings At a regular meeting of the counell, the mayor and all preseut, a petition for narrowlng the side walk on Maln streot, south of Stxth avenue, to ten feet was presented. The oity attor- ney waa instracted to prepare an or- and is worked by the boys principally, a8 wall as the entire farm work, only one farm hand boln%smp\oyod. There are now thirty-ono brys and eleven girls ta atteadance. These range from elzht to nineteen years of age, and are chiefly childrea who, for waat of kind homes and loving pareats, have wan- dered away from the path of the virtu ous and committed some petit crime, and are sent here for correctien for a perlod of tims, ususlly until they be- come of age. AT SCHOOL The state provides two competent teachers, and the common branches of edacation are taught the same as in a district school. The children are bright, obadlent and happy, and enjoy schooling, which most of them were never betore privilegad. Darlag va- cation they all work out doors, and are enabled to cbtaln not only man- nual exerciss, but sclentific Ideas re- garding agricolture, botany, garden- ing and stock breeding. As s00n as the spaclous new baild- ing, costing absut $40,000 of the late appropriation, ls built the present bullding will be converted into shops, where the diffsrent branches of mechanism will ba taught. The superintendent informed me that the farm, thoagh only two years uid, pald §1,600 toward Hying last season, and he is injhopes this year to make the institutlon nearly self-ans. taining although his family is con- stactly Increasing, Competent in- structora are kept constantly with the children while at work, and all atten- tlon possible is given them by way of explaining any techulcal branch that may arise. I was more than pleased at the kindnees shown these homeless children in every department, as well as to note the affection the children had for thelr tutors, Ia saveral cases they have refused to go home on a vislt when they were granted leave of absence, AT DINNER, Ay the ringing of the bell announced dinance. A petition of Frank Hunt. er to be appolnted poll tax collector, was reforred. Fifty-two appllications for saloon licenses were referred to the police committee. The olty treasar— er's repors showed $14 859 cash on hand. Olty Attorney Mayne was allowed $100 for damage to corn crop during the ballding of the levee. The report of the fiaance committee recommend- iog payment to De. Pluney of $100 for ampatation of the arm of Jos.
