THE DAILY BEE-COUNUL BLUFFS 1I0WA TUESDAY MAY 8 P ————— The Daily Bee. COUNCIL BLUFFS. Tueadav finmma. May 8, SUBSCRIPTION nfln Sy ammer, - - - - i Offoe: No. 7 Pearl Street, Near Aroadwi MINOR MENTION, —Soe Joseph Reiter's apring styles, —Additional local on seventh page.} Doc. Trelker, of sporting fame, has lef¢ for Dakota. § To-night s the tlme met for the oalloo dress party of the Eplacopalians. Stells Long and her fast girls yes- torday ocontributed $182.10 to the olty treasary. The Y. M C. A. has secared Gen, Howard to lecture next Thureday night at Dohany's. No jury has yet been drawn for this term of the supreme court, there being a want to see if there are to be any jary cases. There are not enough settees in Bayliss park to supply the demand, e-psclllly on Sunday afternoon and on pleasant evenlngs, It Is reported hat Pat Lacy Intends to move to Oms 4, The shatting up of the gambll ¢ shops Is causing other changes, a .d hence makes the report quite plausible, Permits to wed were yesterday given to A, T. Cox and Nettle L. James, of Oakland; also to 8. M, Shortridge, of this clty, and Nettle A, Galagher, of Gower township, Now that the attention of the authorities has been directed to gam- blers and prostitates, the gentle bovine is no longor molested and roams at will. The olty pound looks lonesome enough, All should hear Gen. Howard's lecture next Thursday evening at Dohany's. His subject 18 to be “‘The Campalgn and Battle of Get- tysburg. There should be a crowded house to greet him.; The vallant veterans of MoPaul, a town on the K, C., in Fremont coun- ty, have arranged for a post of the Grand Army of the Republic, and E. J. Abbott has recelved orders to go there and organize it next Saturday evening, A long and strangel was oaptured yeste! w. Mynster's sand bank. filu lnnkuhlp fell a distance of thirty feet from the blaff above, by the tumbling away of dirt, and was taken alive. It is pro- nounced by some a blowing viper. The Instructions lately 1ssued for the saloonists to keep closed on Sun- day seem not to be heeded In the least. There were a large number of open violations last Sunday, but no complaints were filed yesterday. It s time that either no such orders should be given or else that they shonld mean what they pretend to mean, There is in this as In other matters too much of the boy's play and too many false motions, e — Notice. All of Harry Leland’s meat ac- counts have been left at my office for Immediate collection. Call and pay at once, . VAUGHAN, Justice of the Peace. High License. “{ nnrkod lmke s, There seems to be an undercurrent quletly working here in favor of hav- ing the saloon licenses ralsed to $1,000, Ithas been claimed that a high llcense under the present state law prohibiting the sale of whisky would not work, bat at Des Moines where the license was recently ralsed to §1 000, the saloons, after a few days’ fight, have concluded to pay the amount; at least forty-nine of them have. In Boone the license has been placed at $500, quite a raise for that town. The saloon men there held out three days, but have not concluded to submit to that amount, In this city, the license buing now $400, thirty-five have already ad- vanced the first quarter's license with thelr applications, and ten more have filed applications, and stand ready to pay the amount, while fifteen or twen- ty more will follow. Some of the sa- loon men thewselvas are sald to be in favor of having & $1,000 license, and it 1s #0 confidently predicted by some that the {icense will ere long be placed at that figure, that some have advised saloon men to pay & whole yesr, in. stead of three months in advance, ving a nice sum in case of & Conferring Titles. W. 8. Homer & Co. —————— STILL AFTER THEM. SPIRIT DENTISTRY. How a Medinm Avolded the Use of Ohloroform, A day or two sgo a well known Iady In this olty, who is & medium stopped Into ja dentls office for the purpose of having two molars pulled out. In previous tooth ache pulling ox erlences she had suffered wo sever(- ly and In one case had her jaw brokea, 80 that she natarally dreaded the opera tlon, She Inslsted on having chloro- form administered, and the dooctor prepared acoordingly. Just as he was about to adminiater it, she went into a trance state, and her controlling spirit, an Indian chlef, spoke through her to the doctor, telllnc him not to use the chloroform, ae he, the spirit, would hold her In control, so that she would not. move & muacle a twinge of psin. r went ahead aad pulled three tecth, and the patlent then oame to herself, and expressed sur orlse that the operation was all over, as sho had felt no paln, or, in fact, any other sensation. There are a number who express willlngness to testify to the outward phenomens as related, and here it proves an inter- entlng ncldent for these sclentifically inclined, to glve theorles about. The Iady hersalf claims that this I n s a chlef who lived abcut a hundred yeara 0go, and that he frequently con- trols her. About a week sgo, while talking with another spiritualist about having her toeth extraoted, the latter asked her why she did not have the Indian control her aud save herself the pain, but she replied that the In- dian bad expressed unwlilingness to do 80, as io such a case he would feel the pain himself, and he did not care to suffer eo. Kor some reason the Indian must have changed his mind, and unexpeotedly put in his appear. anco jus: when ho was the most needed. If Spirituallsm can be used for avoiding paln in surgioal and es- peclally dental operations, it s & much cheaper and loss dangeroue method than chloroform or other an- esthetics, The Indisn is certalnly doing a mlsslon of meroy. No Reet for the Wicked But an Ar- rest.—Another Ohapter to the Poker Game. A few days ago a young man named Samuel Van Boren clalmed that Jim Wilson and Jo Kelter pat up a job on him by which $435 was taken from him, the verdant youth lending it to Kelter to bet agalzst Wilson on an alleged game of poker' Both Wilson and Kelter were arrested, and on belng brought before Judge Ayles- worth pleaded guilty of gambling and were fined about $40 each. Young VYan Buren does not propose to let the matter drop there, and an- other case has been started against them for grand larceny, the poker dodge being de- nounced as an outright steal, = Wil- son, whoin the information fs given the credit of having as an allas the name of James Keenan, but whose real name proves to be F. Keenan, has been arrested, but Keiter was not found. Wilson was brought before Justice Vaughan, but took a change of venue, and claiming on oath that Justioes Schurz and Abbott were both material witnesses, the case had to be sent past them to Judge Ayles- worth, where it will be heard this afternoon. Bail has been given for both the accused ia the sum oi $750 each.
