It appeared to be a aquare fight and was all one sided. Hanley’s leg was eprained so that on the third round he was com parativaly helpless and fell before the powerful arm of his antagonist like a prairio cottage before a Nebracka blizzard. It was supposed by the crowd that his leg was broken, as he kept oalling to his time keeper to pull his foot. He clinched tyan bravely several times and held on like grim death to a deceused col- ored eitizon but all to no purpose. Ryan's time keeper finally claimed the fight but the ref eree, Mr. Wm. Cansolidation Indicated. A Oollision in the SBnow on the Missouri Paciflc, The much mooted question of a consolldation of the C., B & Q and Burlington & Miesouri with the Den- ver & Rio Grande is again brought be fore the public and this time in a shape more tangible than ever. Tur Bee has, upon information almost official, 1nsisted from time to time that these two roads would at an early day be merged together, thus giving the Q. a through line to Salt Lake City, and that at that point a connec tion would be made with the Central Pacific. The fact that the D. & R G. wiil lay a third rail from Salt Lake to Ozden, and that the O. P, will at once begin ronnniog its traios into the capital of the kingdom of Brigham shows that all preparations are being made to offset the advantages of the Oregon Short Line, which will make the Union Pacific independent of its old connection. The Central Pacific fiund it necessary to take steps to be equally free from depend- ence on the U. P., and no other routy afforded such an opportunity. There is not & question as to the design of the two great lines, and the comple- tion of the Oregon Short Line will see its consummation already accom- plished. The proposed corsolidation of the Union Pac:fic and Wabash in- terests is in furtheranco of the plot which will add another Pacific road to the list, already large. A special dia- patch from Denver to the Ohicago Times eays: Itis expected here that the Bur- lington and Rio Grande rallroads will soon be consolidated, The straws cf raflroad events are all blowing that way. At this moment General Man. ager Potter of the Chicago, Burling- ton & Qainey, and General Mauager Dodge of the Rio Grande, are on a trip of inepiction of the road which is operated by the gentleman last named. Recently Mr, J. B, Orman, of Pueblo, the chief contractor «f the Rio Grande, introduced a bill in the house of representatives amending tho act relating to corporations, so that railroads operating under char- tarseecuredinadjoining states and ter- ritories mny have the right to merge or cousolidzte, each retaining its orig- inal rights and franchlises, The only roads which are denied the right to consolidate in this proposed bill are those which run parallel and compete with each other. These things are signifizant. Mr. Potter does not make trips of inspection over roads i which he is not interested, The dutles of his office are 8o pressing that he hae no time to moke pleasure ex- cursions over foreign roads. It is rea- sonable, therefore, to suppose that he has some business object in joining Mr. Dodge in a ride over the linea of the Rio Graude company. In intro- ducing the bill referred to, Mr, Orman may have had no other object than the general one of befriending the railroad laws of the state, but there is one rcason why one may think that the blil was prepared for a special ef- fect. Mr. Orman is well known as one of the richest railroad contractors in the state. Ho has done more of the construction work of the Rio Grande than any two other contract- ors. His interests are largely with the Rio Grande, and it is rumored that he had some object in view other than the benefitting of the state. Un- der the existing laws the Rio Grande could not bs merged into the Bur- lington if it wanted to. Leglalation was needed to put matters on a plane where unimpeded action could be had, Under this bill the two roads could consolidate, and eack: could still retain all the rights aud franchises which had been granted to it when the com- pany was incorporated. It is said on good anthority that Gen., Palmer bas given the Burlington poermission to name the directors who will bo elected at the ceming meeting in March. THE MISSOURI PACIFIC SMASH UP, In the list of railrcad accidents published in Tue Bee of Friday, the breaking of an engine was mentioned briefly, The Papillion Times shows that the trouble was much more serl ous than was stated. The Times saye: “‘Owing to drifted wnow in the cute, the Miesouri Pacific passenger trains southward bound Wednesday night wero side-tracked and held here all night, while those coming north were delayed at Springfield. A Remarkab'y Successful and Pleas- ing Entertainment, The sacred concer: given at the Tarner hall Sundsy atternoon by the Omaha tlusical Uaion orchestra, asststed by Kudolph (swert, cornet soloist, and Richard Kohl, solo bass clarionetiet, was a hne entertainment in every respect, The programme consisted of twelve numbers, and em. braced some of the best selections of music, The piece, ‘‘Young America,” which gives fall play to the ability of a eornetist, was admirably rendered by Gawert. Ia responss to an en- core he gavea very good selection, The technique and range possessed by Mr. Gewert gives him a place very near the celebrated Lovy and Ar- buckle, The selection from'the Pirates ot Penzance, arranged by Professor Hoff- man, the director, was well rendered. The first number for Mr. Kohl was a selection from Donizette for the bass clartonette and was well executed by that gentleman This instrument is comparatively new one in orchestras and adds much to the volame of mel- ody, it having a heavy sonorous eound which gives emphasin to the rendition of the music. Mr. Kohl well under- stancs its use, as appeared from his performance yesterday. The duett tor cornet and bass clarlonette was exceedingly well rendered by the two gentlemen and the orchestral sccompaniment was also five. The forcign artis's were en- thusiastically applauded and resnonded a good humored manner. No. 12 of the programme, a march entitled ‘A Greeting to Omaha,” compoeed by Prof, Hctinan, was arlistically ren- dered and evinced a correct knowledge ot muaie by the union and ability on the part of the professor. The maich was 80 loudly applauded that it was repeated, which closed the entertaio- ment, Taese coucerts havo become quite an event in musical circles and are of a high standard of excellence A good house listened to the conceri yosterday and lefumore than satietisd, Too much credit caunot be given to Mr. Julius Meyer, the manager of the union, and Prof, Hoffman, the direc- tor, for their efforts to farnish the mueio loving portion of Omaha with these reflaed and elegant concerts, PHERSONAL. The gas com- pany to which the right to erect works in this city or to acquire them by purchase was given, is now in negotiation with the officers of .the present gas company for the purchase of thelr works. An offer to this end was made yesterday and is now being considered. In case it is accepted the United Ga\ Improvement company will become proprietors of the exiating gas works and will enter into agreement with the city tots furnish gas to the city and consumers at the rates specified in the late ordinance. Should the Nobracka Gas Light company re‘use to sell, mains will at once be purchased and preparations ac:ively begun for the immediate erection of new works. In conversation last ovening with a' reporter of Tue Bee, Manager Gibbs said, ““We have made a liberal cffsr to Mr. Murphy, and feel satistied that he will see that iv 18 to his advantage to accept it.
