The letter of the secretary of the navy, transmitting a supplemental re- port for the naval advisory board to the house, recommends a change in the monitors Puritan, Amphitrte, Terror and Monadnock, Breech load- ing turret guns of great length, and the substitution of a roller for the spindle base is suggested. The esti- mated cost for the Paritan is piven as $960 000 for the hull, $455 976 for the machinery, and §253,160 fr ord- nance. For the completion of the other three monitors the cost will be: Amphitrite, 81,294,220 total ocost $1 801,438; Terror, §1,294,220, total cont §1,825,492; Monadnock, $1,434,- 439, total coat $2083,775.
