The evidence showed that the collector had left a notice with his family during his absence, and the court dismissed the case on the ground that this notice was not sufficient, as it ought to have been served personally. —1It is not known to many, but it is mevertheless true, that there has been an inspection of buildings, flues, eto., going quietly on for some weeks here, and in several instances the chief of the fire de- partment has notified persons to remedy certain defects, and thus prevent fires. A Oolored Woman Arrested as the Heartless Mother of the Baby Found ¥rozen. Oircumatances Point Pretly Bharply at Her as the Guilty One. Othots Susproted of Taking a Part ia the Oruel Act. The readers of Tur Bke will re. member the fact that a few days ago the body of a new born babe was found frczen in the basesiént of an unfinished and vnoccupied bullding at the cormer of Broadway and Union avenue. The babe was apparently a healthy, well developed child, and evidently came to its death by belog placed there soon after birth by some heartless person, and left there to freeze to death, Bince then Coroner Faul and ex-Constable Rosecrans have been working up the case with some dlligence, and yesterday, as a result of the Information they had gathered, a young colored woman, giving her name was Georgla Anna Wash- ington, was arrested, charged with the murder of the lttle innocent as her own offspring The eyidence ac- cvmulated againat her is the fact that she came hcre from Kansas City a short time ago, and on a vhkit to another colored family named Green. She was sccompanied by her mother and a slster, and all three stopped at Green's, they belng related to him, thelr mother being his sister and the girls theretore his niecs The young woman's condition was such as to attract the notics of the neighbors, the coming event casting its shid \w before, One night last week there was & colored dance which was at- tended by the Green family, but this woman, her mother and sister, are sald to have remained at home most of the evening, and it is avowed that this was the time when the child was born. Itis surmised that either the mother or the sister, or both, helped in the disposal of the Infant. The sister hus already left the city and gone to Forest Cny, Mo, The mother of the two girls still remained here until yesterday, when she, with the one now under arrest went to the depot to tako the train for Kansas City, Just before the train started both women were taken into custody. The young woman who is ssid to have given birth to the child had little to say about the affair, She is a quadroon, quite dilapidated in per- sonal apgearance and apparel, and having evidently more animal im. pulses than intelligence. She claimed to know nothing about the matter and threatened to make It hot for the cflizors who arrested her, Her mother olaimed to have been away from the house tor two or three hours on the night in question and not to know anything about the affair, Arvound the bedy of the baby was found s plece of a comfortable and a woman's eack. It Is said that wit- nesaes have been found able to identify the sack as one which was worn by the acocused, and the comfortable as being one that had been used in the house. A portion of the same bed covering was also found a short dis- tanca from the house, As a further fact pointing to the Washington woman as the guilty one, an examination was made yesterday by a physician, who discovered evi- dences that pointed to the same atate of affairs, The woman was brought bafore Judge Aylesworth yesterday on infor- mation being filed charging her with murder. %10 not bsing able to hire an attorney the court, at her request, appotnted W, H. Ware to look after her interesta. Bail was fixed at §2,000, which she was of courae unable to tur- nish, and she was taken back to jail, the examination being being postponed until next Saturday. At the time of the inquest Dr, Em. onds, whoviewed thebody, gave ltas his thatit was a white child, but in view «f the evidence now disclosed the the body was taken up yesterday and and subjected to a careful post mortem by Dr, Macrea, who pro nounced it a colored babe surely, and that it breathed ard lived some time after birth. No specisl marks of vio- lence were discovered, however, - WaNTED —10,8)0 bashe's of corn. Of course the present incumbeut wants 1t, and, while he has nou the slizhtest claim upon it, as against the publie, against the claims of Anderson, he had a priority of right, inasmuch as all that Anderson is, and all that he hoped to be, was the result of Ohap man's machinations, Anderson also had all theinfluence that The Non- parell was capable of, little though it proved to be. He Causes a Husband to Draw a Re- vo.ver on a Traveling Man - All Concerned Arrested. There was a sensational meeting on lower Broadway Saturday aftornoon between two men, one named B, F. Simpson, Tt appenra that Simpson had bezome firod with jyalousy and fecling that he had been greatly wronged by an intimacy which he believed ~had sprang up between his wife and Thurston, He cawe across Thurston and Mrs. Simpson on Broadway, and it is olaimed that in his fury he pulled out & revolver and coming up behind them struck Taurston in the back of the head. Thurston turned, and grabbing his assailant, throw him to the eround About this timne Justice Vaughan and Oonstable Skinner appeared on the scene, and Skinner at once wrenched the revolver from Simp- son’s hand, the weapon kbeing already cocked, The two men and Mre. A Great Traveler and Bpecial Friend of the Sportemen Polsoned By ‘Some Unknown Hand. All the sportsmen of this clty and vicinity knew ‘‘Old Den.” He was not merely a valuable dog, but a dog with a history. His tralners were such veterans in the field as Mr. Sackett and the late Dr. Fichera. ‘‘Don" was born in England, and crossed the At lantic while a pu;py and soon sfter arrived in this city. Being of genn ine blocd Mr. Sackett, and shortly of ier Dr. Fichera, paid special atten tion to his education, and in a shor: time he could jump, fatch, potut, dance and speak—not merely bark or whine--for the dcctor taught him tu a most remarkable degree to utter sounds, as a low whisperiig voice, tc the amusement and amszement of many. When asked where he han been, what he hid seen, ete., he would try motions and noisee, quite successfully conv sy the account of his doings, while the intelligenc: beaming in his eyes, supplied what might be lacking in the narration anc seemed almcst pro f hat he was a lit tle man in a dog's hide. He vould werk in the fisld cqually we'l as a set. ter, pointer or water dog. He could swim under the water like a fish, and caught many a wounded duck below the suiface of the water, his head then appearing much like that of a seal. He was full of tricks also, and very cunning. The late Dr. Fichera had him on several ¢f his deer hunting « xpeditions north, and in the west, and he was at all times and places h's favorite dog. The attachment between the late doc tor and his dog was so strong tha’ when the master aled ‘'Don” was al most heart broken. Herfased to be driven away from the pressnce f the form of him he loved so well, and when it was taken to the cemetery the dog kept his place under the hearse, and seemed an sinceroly a mourner as | 5 though he had & human heart to ache, When all others lsft the cemetery he remained there, and diggirga hole in the mound he nestled down there, and for three days and nights remained there, grievirg himself away, touching neither fiod nor drink until Mr Withoey found him and took him away, sccladivg him in_the cellar under his atore, where Dz, Poulson found him and bovght him. “Don” wae then only three years old. He presented a pitiful sight of mourning, ‘miscry and melancholy. An his late master and Dr, Poulsou ueed to ride out tcgether often, and kept their horees iu the eame stable, “‘Don” seemed at once to recognizs in his new master a dear friend and speedily, by the new attachment, revived from his stupor. The dog followed his new master twice to Califcrnia and enjoyed wany cozat hunts there, and frum the straite of Oarguinas fetched hundreds of ducke. He ascended with him the highest peaks of the Rocky Mountaina and brought pins hens from 12 0(0 feet above the level of the sea, and his last swim in Bear lake, in Idaho, made hiw as sick of alkalt as though he had swallowed copious drafts of At San Francisco *‘Don” cross the bay by himself, and in that eonfui «f boats, and trains, and stations showed a romarkable intelli gence in never failing to get on and off with the acouracy «f an old and experienced traveler. The trainmen and boatmen all knew him and he had free and welcome passage any- where and always, He was stran, familiar with rail way travoling, his experience «f six trips over the Union Pacific and Cen- tral Pacific evidently not being in vain, At stations he would get out and exercise himself on the plaiform and farnieh much amusement to the passengers, but he al had an eye on the conductor, and at the shout «f ‘‘all aboard"” he would jump Into the bageage car, lie down and patiently wait for the next stoppage. “Don” was to have started to day on another enjoyable California jour- ney, but on last Friday forencon he was inyateriously poisoned by strych- nive, given him by some unknown hand. Dr. Paulson was notified, but too late to do avything for him, and death speedily filowed. “Don’s" son, a besutifal and vala able hunting dog, belonging to Mr, Arbuthnot of Omaha, was shotthrough the body the day bofore and died al- most instantly. Another valuable hunting dog worth soveral hundred dollars, and belonging to JohnF. Oliver, has also been pois. oned and died, Buspiclon voints to some partles in the vicinity of Broadway aud Scott streot as being the killers ¢ f these val- uable dogs The shooting of Mr. Ar buthnot's dog was done at the creek in the rear (f The Nonpareil building, and it is claimod that the poison has been dealt out in that vielnity, Some steps should be taken to ferret out the offenders and bring them to punish- ment, and certaln it is that greater stress should be lasid upon the drug- gists' to compel them to keep a com- plote register of the purchasers cf poison.
