Justice ot the Peace and Notary Public. eIBBroadway, Council Bluffs, A PENNSYLVANIA TOBACCO FARM, How the Lanoaster Farmers Cuitl- vate ana Cure the Weed Phiiadelphin Press, The crop of 1882 s now in the sheds and barns uearly ready for striping and packing, aud while not ranked o8 exceptionally good, it is at least up to the average. The nam: of Jacob M. Frantz having been given as o cuccessful grower of skill and long experienoe, & visit to his farm, | four milea from Lancaster City, was lately mado, Unfortunately, Mr. Frantz himself was not at howe, bot from Mre. Frantz, and afterwards her son, who was found in Lancaster, wany intoresting facts were ob- teined, The farm contains about oighty neres, and from twelve to fif teen are usually devoted to tobaces although iu general only from 3 t per cont of the acreage of Liancuster farms are devoted to tobacco, the great care the crop requires in all its stages having shown growers that when they attempt more thun can well bo done, they lose by it. They are very carcful to conduet their to- bacco culture so that fertility shall not be impaired. Stable mancre is regularly and heavily applied, with no chemical fortilizors; most of the other crops grown are covsumed on the farms in stock foeding, and in addition to the large amounts thus made at home, stable manure is im- ported in great quantities from Phila- delphia by rail, and even Pittsburg, This shows the enterprise which to- baceo has incited. The amount ap- plied to tobacco land is not all appro- priated by that crop, but tells admira- bly on wheat, which always follows to- bacco, and which often yields when it does not lodge, from thirty to torty bushels per acre. The fall wheat sown at the present time has a splon- did sppearance, which adds to the charm of the country. In this way Lancaster farms are improving under the stimulous of tobacco culture, in- stead of retrograding, as they do, or did, at_the south. Mr. Franz's cultare must be excaed- ingly careful, as his crops generally equal or exceed 2,000 pounds peracre, while the average for the whole state rarely exoeeds 1,000 pounds. His main tobacco barn is ninety-six feet long with a width of probably forty feot and posts elghteen feet long. The ventilators are horizontal instead . f perpendicular, and about four feet apart, 8o that each of the four tiers of tobacco stalks as they hang in the barn can receive a current of outside alr at the same time. An ingenious arrangement opens all the ventilators above each other at the same time, and holds them in place. A few days of drying weather will fit the crop for stripping and packing, although this work can be left if desired until winter. In the caeo of very drying weather for a long time the leaves become s0 brittle that they crumble in handling, and then, if packing must proceed, artificlal dampening must be resorted to, which is done by the use of steam in a close room, The glowers pack in bundles, making three qualities generally, The lower leaves, which have more or less sand ordirt in them, are used for “fillers” in cigar-making; another grade goes as ‘‘soconds,’ and the best as wrappers, The latter sre again assorted in lengths of four sizes. Last year the buyers, who are usually as sharp as buyers need be, used a little sharp practics which has left some soreness behind. They according to specified lengths, and —say those who would measnre 24 inches, while those for 22 or 20 and 18 1nches would be considerably lcss, It wos a now mode cf buying, and growers found “‘where thoe laugh camo you sufter trom Dy BURDOCK use 1t you are afficte in with storattve In 1t you have any species of Humor or not to take oD BITTERS, 4 wibs Siliousness, use SURDOCK BLOOD BITTERS 1t yow s¥e prostrated with sick Headache, take BURDOCK BLOOD BITTERS 1 your Bowels are disordered, rogulate them with BURDOCK BLOOD BITTERS 1t wour Blood 18 mpure, purity 1t with BURDOCK BLOOD BITTERS. 1t you ha e Indigestion, you will ind an antidote BURDOCK BLOOD BITTERS. 1t you are troubled with Spring Complaints, er- adicate them with BURDOCK BLOOD BITTERS, 1t your Liverls torpid, restore It to healthy actioa BURDOCK BLOOD BITTERS It your Liver is affected, you will find a sure re- BURDOCK BLOOD BITTERS, Pimple, fal BURDOCK BLOOD BITTERS. 1t you have any symptoms of Ulcers or Scrofulous Sores, & curative remedy will be found in BURDOCK BLOOD BITTERS in” wheo ths shrinkege came to be dered, When the bar- galn ™ was made each grower caloulated on a certain amount at the No. 1 price, but when they came to deliver probably two-fifths of the longest had shrunk a trifla below 24 inches, and the buyer thus cisimed it at the second price, although just as good for wrapping as if it hd been 30 inches or mere. The operation can not be repeated. The crop is contracted faz- farm by agenta of haith 1440 cities, “somasi==<y & San Frear -a00, where the very best ~riu goes, The delivery is made at the Lancaster packing houses, when it {s weighed and checks given, —_—— d to Hear It “For several montns I endured a dull pain through my lungs and shoulders; lost my spirits, appetite and color, and could with ditliculty, remain from m( bed. When an Eskimo youth has killed & polar bear unalded, and so proved himself capable of providiug for the wants of a family, he 1s sont forth at night to obtain a wife by seizing the first girl he can surprise unawares. She screams, of course, bringing out the whole village population, and, an appreciative audience secured, sets upon her eaptor with tooth and nail, releases herselt from his clutches, and agreed to take all the wrappers named a liberal price for the longest paddling his own cance. Tn the first © #a, a ciroular course is marked out, half of which 1s traversed by the maiden—eoncumbered only with & waist-band — ere the word {s given for the would-be possessor to go in pur suit, in the hope of over-taking her before ehe has thrice compassed the circle; that achieved, ste hss no choice but to take the suitor for her lord, In the water chase the damsel takos her paddle until sho has obtain od a reasounble start, whin her ad- mirer sets off afier her. Bride-chasing is gonerally a trial of horeemanship. In this stupe it is practiced by most of the nomadie tribes of Oentral Asia Ciptain Burnay tells us that when it has 10 be decided how a Torcoman belle is to be settled in life *‘the whole tribe turne out, and the young lady, being al lowed the chofce of horsce, gallops away from her suitors. Farther cere- monies are dtspensed with, and he takes hor to his tent.” In some tribes the girl s burdened with the carcass of a goat or lamb, which must be snatched from her lap. The Hezarchs mark out a course some twelve miles long aud three wide, Assoon a8 the maiden has got far enough from the crowd to be able to gaide her ateed with perfect freedom, she turns around, stretches out her hands to the walting horse. men, and her father gives them the signal to goin pursult. The chase is sometimes & long-lasting one, A traveler records one 1in which, after had dwindled to four. Racing neck and neck together the riders grad ually gained on the quarry, ench shouting in turm: “I come, my Perl! flm your lover!” Oaqe of the horses suddenly faltered ia his stride, two houra’ galloping, the field of nine | ¥ and wife. So Iato as the seventeonth century it waa cvstomary in some parts of Ire- land for the bridegroom’s friends to receive thoee of the bride with a shower of darts, oaretully directed so 08 to fall harioless; and Lord Kaimes who dled in 1782, deposes that the marriage observances of the Welsh of the day wera significantly symbolical of marriage by cature, the respective friends of the bride and groom meet- fng on horseback, the former refus wig (o deliver the ludy on dcmand and brivging about a sham conflict, dur. ing which the vearest kinsman the bride, behind whom she is mounted, aalloped awsy, to ba pursued by the Opposite par 1til men and horses had had en of it, when the bride groom wus permitied to overtake the pretended fugitive and bear her off in triumph, The Borricors only Earopean of Franco aro the people among whom the form of capture still survives, Upon the day «f the wedding the doors of & bride's house are closed and barricaded, the windows barred and her frionds musterod within, Prosently the bridegroom’s party comes, asking admission on one false pretense afior snother, Finding speech of no avail, they endeavor to force an entrance, with no better fortune. The bsffled suitors checked their headlong career with one accord, bat coming into collision, two of them rolled over on the plain; and, eluding the remaining detrimental’s grasp with a triumphant laugh, the maiden reached her lover's side. In a moment his arm was around her waist, and she was his own, Among the Kalmucks the bride race {8 reduced to a match, and Dr. Clarke avers that the girls are such good horsewomen that for one to be caught against her wlll was a thing unknown. Kalmucks ot high degree, however, do mot run their brides down; they bargain for them, and the bargain concluded the bridegroom and the ohiof men of his horde ride to the camp of the bride's people, who feign opposition to the match, and only eur- render the lady after a mock confliot.
