HE DAILY BEE ~COUNCIL BLUFESA;QWA FRIDAY, JANUAFY 5 “The Daily Bee GOUNGIL BLUFFS. Friday M;;ming Jan 57 Oarrlor, 2 ai Ofce: No. 7 Pearl Street, Near Wroadway. —_— Taar Oouncil Bluffs has had a yesr of great prosperity, and great ad- vancement !s evident from the show- ings of facts and figures already given in Tae Bee. It remains with its citi- zens and business men whether this growth shall continue, or whother there shall come stagnation and de- cline. This oity has al- most unparalleled railway facil- fties,. It hes many marked ad- vantages for manafacturing enter- prises and wholesalo establishments. It:remains simply for Council Blaffs to use ita facilities and improve its opportunities This city is in condition to reach out much further into the surround- ing country for businees than 1t has yot done and to draw trade here from amuch larger territory than is yeot covered. In thus gathering In the business which ought to be tributary to Coun- cll Blufis, all must concede that Tue Bek is an invaluable help, of which every business man should avail him- welf. Besides its large local circula- tlon it finds Ita way into almost every nook and corner of a large field, east ‘wesy, north and south, where its com- potitors are almost unheard of. The wide awake and enterprising business men and manufacturers of Council Buffs need but little more than a reminder of TuL Brk's ex- tenslve circulation to cause them tof ¢ roalize that by no other advertising medium can they so readily reach the trade which they are seeking. If lenienoy is shown to one prop- erty owner because of his inability to raize his building, then all the neighbors claim the same, and thus many adjustments are required. The dirt is so badly frozen that it is in great chunke, and does not make very neat filling or very safo wa'ks, Some parts of the street are raised, and others are objected to, and until something more is done, the sidewalks are in a very unsafe condition, as well as very uncomfortable to travel over, el e o Holiday gocds at Harkuess, Oroutt Co. - S To strengthen and build up the sys tom, & trial will convince you that Brown's Iron Bitters is the best med- icine made. A Suggestion That the Volunteer Firemen Reorganize as Such. partment has loft the volunteer organ- ization little to do in the actual work of suppressing fires, beyond such as- tance as thoy may of their own ac- cord afford, 1t is the desire of some to waintain the volunteer organiza. tion, as it has been of long standing and aboat it have naturally gathered wany pleasant associations and mem- ories, It has been suggested that the volunteers malntain organization a8 a firemen’s relief oniation, but this has not ccmmended itself to all a8 just what they want, though this may be a leading feature of the or- ganization, 1t is now suggested that a fire patrol be organized by the vol- unteers, the duty of the patrol being 80 take charge of the removal of prop- erty from burning buildings, and to protect stocks of goods, ete., from loss by water or theft. Such patrols are In oltles espocially an essentlal foeature of flre departments, and the work {8 an important one, as will be seen by a moment's thought. How They Have Been kought by the County Pbysician, The county physician, Dr, F, P, Bel- linger, has prepared in his report to the county board a showing of the|? number of cases treated by bim in the city, and the nature of the difficultics, The totsl number of cases treated was 89, and only one death has occurred, which is & preity strong showing that those of the poor who are taken slck are carefully and skillfully cared for, Tho nature of the troubles are classi fied as follows: Pneumonia 3, mea sles 2, bronchitie 3, anginia pectoris 1, rheumatism 2, chiid birth 1, congos- tion of the epine 2, congestion of the ilver 2, sorofala 4 3, cyetitis 1 varicocele 2, orch , abscees 4, grenular opthalmis 2, nephritis 1, cataract 1, phymrals 2, small pox 1, septicemia 1, delirlum tremens 2, ty- phoid fever 12, cholera infantam 3, malarial fever 4, prolapsed rectum 2, typhe-malarial fover 22, frozen 3, STREET ORDINANCES, The City Council Parzes Three Important Ones Regulating the Highways. No Cattle, no Awnings or Bigns, no Railway Obatructions. At the last meeting of the city council there were three important ordinances paseed. One of thens was amendatory to the ordinance restrain- ing steck from running ai large. The ordinance as thus amended inclades cattlo as well as horses, hogs, etc, and is derigned to prevent especially the cow nuisance The cows have had their own way heretofore, much t the annoyance of many citizens, whe bave had foliege despriled and sice wallca demoral The enforcement of this ordinance as now amende” wil restrain cows from running at large in the platted portion of the city, bu will allow of their grezing in the out- ok rte, where exists no particular ob. jection againet them and where many cltizans 0wn cows, Another ordlnance in regard to strcetr wao passed, which declares war on wooden awnings, sidewalk signe and advertising posts, It ix designed to clear the streets of all theso ob structions and make a clean sweep The trouble has been that the mer- chants in their rivalry have posted ont one sign after another and made such extensive displays of goods on the sidowalks that the public was given bat little chance to use the walke, while the appearance of the stroets has beon made unseemly. Under this or- dinance no more barrels and boxes, old stoves, plows, etc., can be set out on the sidewalks for people to tumble off, or by which to tear their clothes. The ordinance provides, however, that whero the sidewalk is twelve feet wide the occupant of the building can have slgns or dlsplays of goods extending out not more than three feet on the stdewalk, and where it Is less than twelve feet they cannot extend more than two feet. Cloth awnings must be at least seven feot aove the side- walk 80 that a tall man can pass under without knocking off his silk tile. There have been numerous com- plaints about the danger of the rail- way orossings, as well as the annoy- ances caused by the streets being blccked by freight cars, while switch- ing {8 going on. The ocouncil sought to remedy this also, by the passage of an ordinancs requiring railway com. panies to keop flagmen at the cross- ings of Broadway aud Main street to warn passersby of approaching trains. The new ordinance also provides that cars must not be allowed to stand across either strest Jorger then five minutes, nor across other strects longer than ten minutes. The pen alty fixed for the viclation of this ordinanco is a fine of from $26 to $100. 1f theso ordinances are strictly en- forced there will bo quite & reforma- tory wave sweep along the thorough- fares of trado here ificont machinery of Buraham & Sone, and then ray that we ara not metropolitan, They can and do furnish the finest fresh ronated coffoo imaginable, Table linens, napkins, doylies, tow- els and croshes cheap at Harkness, Orcutt & Co, ' —_———— Mz Georgs Dodge Spoaks. ‘This gentleman lives in Kmporium, Pa., and snys: ““Jne of my men, Sam Lewis, while working in the woods, sprain- od hix ankle 80 bad he could hardly hobble to the house.
