Another State erh Suffera Frorm aWealth of Great Men and & Superabundance of Talent, WASHINGTON, cembor 30, —The publication of the decidedly personal interview of ex Governor Hendrioks, in which he flatly declines to be a candidate for governor in 1884 to ad vance the interests of any person, hae some what retarded the McDonald boom. Up to the appearance of Mr. Hevdricks' interview the McDonald managers had been running things with a high hand and an outstreached arm. They bad been retting up men here and putting others down there at their own sweet will, the sole object belng to magnify the import- ance of Mr, McDonuld, and to make everything contribute to his nomina- tion. Mr. Hendricks is not the go- 2al, unselfish, selt forgetting soul ho might be, and he does not look with complaisance upon the casting of lots at the foot of his eick bed for the place which for many years he had consid- ercd to be his individual property The McDonald ‘nanagers shcu d have learned wisdom by their experience in 1880. Mr. Hendricks then had the opportunity of his life, as well as did Mr. McDonald, but it passed both of them, animproved. Senlle gangrene of the foot is not regarded as conda cive tojthat unselfish state of mind in which a politician wili do in 1884 any more than he would have thought of doing four years before. Gov, Foster sald to Gen, Garfield at Chicago that the shadow of the presidency never rested over a man but once in his life, and it will save Mr. McDorald a great and varied heartache if he will learn that fact now. At any rate. it will be later than 1884 when Mr. Hendricks will stand over Mr. McDonald and place the crown upon his brow. A con- sultation of the files of history dating back to the January convention of 1868, when Mr. Hendricks came ao perilously near the nomination, and to which body Mr. McDonald was a delegate from Indiana, may afford the curlous reader a reason for the lack of devotion now shown by the retired to the aspiring statesman, Ex Governor Hendricks suggests that either Judge Turple, of this city or Colonel Gray, of Randolph, would make a good democratic candidate for the governorship. This suggestion is gall and wormwood to Mr. McDonald, since Colonel Gray was the gentloman who cheated him out of the com- plimentary vote for the United States senator at the termination of his menatorial career, Judge Turple is a mau of great ability, but very radically and severely demccratic. He wae the short term senator wo suc ceed Jesse D. Bright, and is the idol of the liguor league. Another cand idate for the governorship is the Hon, William Mack, of Terre Haule, a law- yer of promtnence, and a strong man, Ho has served acaeptably as speaker of the lower house, It is pretty well underatood that Mr. Holman is a candidate for United States senator ageinst Mr. Voorhees, and that ho is shaping matters to that end, Mr, Holman was the candidate of the anti McDonald wing of the party in 1873, and came within two or three votes of receiving the caucus nomination. Shouid he make a dead set against Mr. Voorhees he can prob- ably defeat him, as the entire course of the Wabash esman has alien- ated many of his party friends. Mr. Holman would command almost a solid following in the southern part of the state, where the entire democratic majorities are, On the Repubilcan side of the house the question of the next candidate for governor is receiving some attention, Col. Dudley continues to be favorably mentioned, as does Maj. W, H. Cal- kins, who has been an snnounced can- didate for some time. Taking the notual oost of the constraction at §12 000 per mile, we find that a sum of §132,- 000,000 has been actually thrown away; and, keeping in view that the capitalization of all euch speculative constructions s usually made at from four to five times the actual cost, we obtain the appalling figure of over £600,000,000 taken out of the com- munity, with nochance of that amount ming remunerative for a genera- tion to come. This overconatruction has, of course, to be stopped, and with it must come further depression of the already heavily-depressed iron industry. The closing of iron mills must necessarily aftect the ooal trade, and this must -l- feot the mo-called cosl roads. Jersey Central and Reading are already seri- ously feeling the consequences of the new condition of affairs, and Delaware, Lackawanna and Western, which has 0 heavily increased ita obligations by the guarantee of interest on its West- ern extension, is now showing a dis- position to cut rates for the purpore of making the two ends meet. Last week’s heavy drop in N. Y. Central and Burlington and Quinocy is another sympton ot the present state of affairs. In one word, the Wall street pros- pects for 1883 are far from being en- couraging.
