The duelists were George Hollenbeck ard Wm, Strat ton, both New Yorkers, born and raiscd uvar Palmyra; they wero of rich descent of the early Hollanders, They were educated at Cambridge; the tormer graduated as a lawyer and che latter as a physician. They came outof collego about the same time of Lincoln's ficst call for voluntecrs to suppress the southern rebellion. They enlisted avd went through the war, serving in_ Col. Gordon's Oue Hun: dred and Forty fourth New York regi- ment, At tha close of the war they returned home, but finding profes- sional pursuits too tame for them thoy concluded to go west. Before they left home a difficulty arose between them which wus prevented from end- ing in bloodshed by the interposition of mutual friends. Before they had a chance to meet again Stratton sought his fortunoe in the far went. He wandered to California where he went to work as u mines Hollenbeck went in the ssme dircction, bub stopped at Colorado, whoro he also became a miner. They never heard of each other after this, They have since followed the business of inining, but have never become as rich as they at first expected. A few days ago they met in_the Pecos mining camp and recognized each other. The school and social polish had been rubbed off by the trial and hardships incident to life in the mining camps, Hollenbeck was overjoyed to meet Stratton, who repelled him and said they would settle that little unfiniehed difficulty which arose between them at their Jast meeting. Hollenbeck eaid he had forgotton all about the difli- culty referred to, and entertained no ill-feelings whatever against him. Stratton insisted on a ettlement sccording to tho code. Hollenback said if nothing short of that would do he would accommodate him, Accord- ingly arrangements were consum- mated for a duel. They were to fight with pistols in a dark room. Kach was to announce ready, after Which & third party was to count three, when they wero to fire, The room was as dark as Egpyt. They went into it and anbounced ready from opposite corners. *‘Ono, two, three,” and Stratton fired. Stratton fired a second shot, but the only response from Hollenbeck was a groan, Strat- ton beliving he had wounded Hollen- beck, fired a third shot in the direc- tion of the groaning. The report of & pistol came from a corner directly op- posite from where tha groan appeared to proceed from and Stratton sell. No more shots being exchanged the miners opened the room and entered. A light revealed the fact that Strat- ton had been killed, while Hollen beck was unhurt, Hollenbeck is a ven- criloquist, and on entering the room, took his stand in a diagonal corner from his adversary, and W make him believe ho was in the opposite corner, threw his voice in that quarter of the roum, where the bullets irom his ad- vereary’s pistol harmlessly buried themselves in the wall, It had been 80 long since they had ceen each other that Hollenbeck’s ventreloquiem had entirely escaped the memory of Strat- ton, The affair has caused o great cough, finally carried him off. The Great Sioux Reservation The Language of S8igns—Indian Educa- tion—The Sioux Gcd—Roster of the Tribes. Sioux City Journal, “This scalp was taken at the Hill- Where-the-Crows-Were-Killed, north of the Black Hills, thirteen years ago. 1t is from a Crow warrior, aud was taken by Spotted Eagle, head war chief of Sitting Bull, who wore it un- til not long ago, when proverty com- pelled him to sell it to me.” So ex- plained W. . Caton, trader at Chey- enne river agency who was found at Strange Bros.” offico yesterday by the roporter. The note-book boarer beg- ged Mr. Caton to go on with his talk. *This, then, is doubtless the oldest mill west of the Alleghenies,” and Mr, Caton held up what might have passed for a giant's war club—a yellowish stono of about fiftoen pounds weight, egg-shaped, and with one point rough- ened something like a millstone. But- falo rawhido, sewed with sinews, cov- ered tho stone, excepting the grinding end, and around the small sapling of ash that served for o handlo, firmly uniting the handle to tho stone, *‘The Sioux have not used this style of mill to grind corn since the traders brought in coffee mills An old tquaw ex- plained to me thst thoy used 1) make a little hollow in the top of a atump, and with a blow and then a shoving motion of the stone make the corn inio meal,” Tho reporter asked what success the commissioners are likely to have who have been appointed to treat for opening a part of the great Sioux res- ervation to settlement. I'hat T can- not tell. The different bands each claim that it alone has the best and only good title to the reservation and this will be one trouble, Another will be the payment. They will probably aek that the government givo them bonds and pay them yearly »0 much interest, They distrust pay- ment in cattle, farming implements, or any kind of goods. They say no account is sent them to show that the money they are entitled to under a is all spent on the goods they “But the Sioux sold the Black “Yes, and thought they did agood thing in selling that country to the whites. The Great Spirit made the ground shake there—there must have been an earthquake sometime— and what was worse, the water some- times foll in rivers--like the water- on the Bello Nourche, I suppose. Then thero were bears thers, and tho Sioux did not use the Black Hills country for a hunting groond much befora they sold it.” “They are not afraid «f bears?’ #No, not afraid in tho ordinary sense, but superstitiously. lieve that bears can and then waylay and kill them, once. talked, for he had talked with one *1 suffered for several months rected, and have felt no pain since first spout that spoiled the crops this year They be- talk, and that hey s to what bunters are sayiny Y ey g 16 AN i YU | gens, lot G in sectiou 3, and lot 1 in the Choyonne river agency an old mau named Hawk talked to me about this He szid he knew that bears Ho was hunting and followed a deer preaching about the punishment of the wicked, a heavy clap of thunder came. The audience, the equaws par- ticularly, were neryous from the ser- mon, and when they heard the thun- der, every one rushed to the door, Some of the old women were knocked down and somewhat hurt by being trampled on by the crowd. “The missionary oxplained that he was not to blame for the squaws get- ting hurt; told Spot that it was to make him good and teach him a better way; that good people at the east had sent him to teach the Sioux the true re- ligion and to tell them of the only true God. “Spotted Tail stood up and drew his blanket about his shoulders: white man's God was weak, for had not the white men killed him? The Sioux, too, had a God, a strong All Father, who was with him when he hunted, when ho mado war, aud when he went into his tepee—always with him, He did not want the red shirts to tell hun of the white man's God, whom they had hated so that they killed him. *But the miesionaries went to the new agency in spite of Spotted Tail's objections. The children in the schools are doubtless bencfitted somewhat, though aftorward they go back to the old ways. They learn to read papers printed in the Sioux lan- guago to the older members of the tribe, 5o that all of them are much better posied on what is going on than you would suppose, 1 have had them como to me to atk about some ruling of the department about which I kad heard nothing, At the Cheyenne riy- boys and girls, can read.” H#How many Sioux do you rickon on the great Sioux reservation 1" ' ‘About 24,600 and some 3,200 on the enat side of the Missouri on sopa- rate resorvations, The largest agency is Pine Bidge, where there are 8,000 Ogalallas, San Arcs and Minnecon- jans.
