AsHLAND, Soptember 26, —As & general rule prosperity stares the peo- ple of this staunch old county in the face this year. Crops were all good and secored in good condition, The yield of corn and hay is large, and our stockmen consequently are in the best of humor, for it should be remem- bered that stock-raising is one of the principal industries of the county. i RAILROAD MONOPOLY intereats are supposed to be well cared for in the nominations made by the republicans for the senate and the house. The greenbackers have en- tered the fiald with their men, and now we aro waiting to see what the anti-monopolists will do. Plenty of work for them. SAD DEATH On Sunday morning a lad named Hinkley, about twelve years old and orphan, met with a terrible doath. He was taking a cow to pasture, and fastoned one end of o rope around his body, the other end being secured to the cow'shead, The cow became fright- ened and _ran, dragging the poor boy with her, breaking hia back, crushing in the back part of his head, and bruising his body frightfully. = His death was almost instantancous, Mr. Scllick, a fow miles south of Ashland, recently sold his fine farm at $30 per acre, and will remove o Illi nois, ASHLAND is improving, ot rapidly, but nicely and substantislly, Livington's at- tractive and ¢>minodious opera house, is approaching completion, It is built of brick, 44x100 feet, and will prove a great convenience to the town, s well as a credit to its liberal founder, Our two flouring mills are being run to the extent of their capacity. The Effectof the Recent Frost-Suc- cessful Keatures of the Faur, Correspondence of 11 Exx, Davip Crry, Neb., September 23.— The frost of the evening of the 20th, and which fell upon Nebraska, about the time the state convention mana. gers were gatting in their work, was of sufficient severity to kill the corn in many places, as successfully as the bosses blasted the hopes of the honest republicane, All along the Blue River and in the east of Butler county along Oak Creok the corn is as dry to-day as it will be in December, while on the higher land, between these, it is still growing and many farmers are cutting up the stalks for fodder, SEWARD in passing through an evolution, in school matters, which {s worthy of notice by the thoughtful educator, A new foundry and machine shop is located between the depot and the town, and new buildings are evidenc- ing the march of progress. The herds of fine stock, large num- ber of trained horses great display of grain, vegetable, mashinery driven by steam power, bicycle races, buildings full of household, fancy and art work, and specimens from the great stores, shops, offices, nurserics, and farms of the county, the acres of ground packed full of teams, and 1,000 «m'rics indicated that this was probably the best county feir ever held in the state. It is to be noticed that Wahoo once had the best fair ground and finest trask in the state, and H. D, Perky labored to build up that enter- prise in Ssunders county, without hardly a kind word from a large class of people who should have helped bring the state fair to that county, To-day all is in ruins, for the build ings are goue, except the floral hall, which is used for a barn, and the track is destroyed, and the people may success of his railroad in Denver, Many peoplo seem to doubt the prac- tical benefit of a fair beyond “‘a days’ amusement,” or a ‘Ylittle fun.” But it seems to thie scribe, that in the his tory of fairs, the state fair of this year, has done them Every town now has its representa tive in Towa, Illinois, or New York, trying to buy blooded stock, or secure sume improvement.
