AsHLAND, Soptember 26, —As & general rule prosperity stares the peo- ple of this staunch old county in the face this year. Crops were all good and secored in good condition, The yield of corn and hay is large, and our stockmen consequently are in the best of humor, for it should be remem- bered that stock-raising is one of the principal industries of the county. i RAILROAD MONOPOLY intereats are supposed to be well cared for in the nominations made by the republicans for the senate and the house. The greenbackers have en- tered the fiald with their men, and now we aro waiting to see what the anti-monopolists will do. Plenty of work for them. SAD DEATH On Sunday morning a lad named Hinkley, about twelve years old and orphan, met with a terrible doath. He was taking a cow to pasture, and fastoned one end of o rope around his body, the other end being secured to the cow'shead, The cow became fright- ened and _ran, dragging the poor boy with her, breaking hia back, crushing in the back part of his head, and bruising his body frightfully. = His death was almost instantancous, Mr. Scllick, a fow miles south of Ashland, recently sold his fine farm at $30 per acre, and will remove o Illi nois, ASHLAND is improving, ot rapidly, but nicely and substantislly, Livington's at- tractive and ¢>minodious opera house, is approaching completion, It is built of brick, 44x100 feet, and will prove a great convenience to the town, s well as a credit to its liberal founder, Our two flouring mills are being run to the extent of their capacity. A new lumber yard, one of the largest and finest in the state, is just beginning operations. The creamery is in motion, Our merchants and other business men have their hands full, and have no time for idleness. Morris & Gould are pushing the furniture business at a lively rate, Rev. H. A. Gulld, formerly of Juni- ata, recently removed here with his family, and has taken full charge of the Baptist pastorate, a large and flourishing interest. Prof. Hill, the now principal of our public schools, impresses one with the solidity of his echolastic and educa- tional qualitles, Heis giving excel- lent satisfaction in his responsibl position, and is ably seconded in his offorts by Prof. Parker and the other members of the faculty. The Windsor is receiving a large atronsge. G. It is to be noticed that Wahoo once had the best fair ground and finest trask in the state, and H. Smith, formerly county superintendent, has charge of the city schools with a half dozen aesistants Politics are very uncertain for no- body seems to fiud any amount of en- thusiasm since the state convention, M. B. Logan, of the general store at Brainard, was found dead in his store two days sgo.
