The Veterans Gathering ia Bood- 1y Numbers, Yeeterday's Doings in Camp and To-day's Pro- gramme, Sundry Incldents of Interest Yesterday was the opening one of the soldiers’ reunion, and the city pre- sented quite a military appearance. Most of the business buildings were decorated with the national colors, with flags and with emblems. Across the street in front of the Ogden house appeared a large flag, and across Broadway in front of the city build. ing. The court house is decorated appropriately. Tur Bee office joins in the decorative apirit, and besides having its front adorned has a large banner stretchad across Pearl street beariug the words, “Tue Bre Wel- comes Our Country's Brave Dofend- ors.” Many of the private residences are also decorated, some of them very tastofully. The main streets were thronged with old soldiers, the uniforms notl being very uniform, but each manag- ing to havo some badge or insignia to mark them as among the heroes, for whom all have respect, and to whom all extend a welcome, Kvery train brought companies of veterans, who were met on arrival by mounted escorts and guided to places of shelter and sustenance, At the fair grounds 150 tents were pitched, and others are to be as fast as needed. Here there was much of military life displayed. Comrades met old com- rades; groups chatted oosily; the headquarters wore crowded with ap- plicants for information and ration tickets; tents were being made habit- able; in fact, a multiplicity of ever- varying scenes of interest was pre- sented. Among the companies who arrived yestorday was Col. E. Kretchmor's cavalry company from Colurg, Towa. This is che only cavalry company in the state, and they have equipped themselves throughout at their own expense. There are about thirty five of the boys here, mounted, uniformed and armed, and they will take an ac- tive part in the sham battle te-day. Col. Kretchmer ie in command and P. S. Chenoweth is first heutenant. Most of the company came on horse- back, a distance of sixty miler, An unfortunate accident occurred to the color bearer, Col. Kretchmer's son. The company halted and dis- mounted near the city, and whilo he was coming down a blufl, in some way he fell, dislocating his ankle, the injury being very pain- ful, indeed, and apoiling his enjoy- ment of the reunion, The following companies are here: Jewett Post, No. 60, G. The Democrats Go Through the Motions of Nominating Oandidates, P. J. Gallagher Nominated for Clerk and J. F. Brod- back for Recorder. An Unenthusiastio Gathering. In mcoordance with the published call the democrats of the county met yesterday afternoon in delegate con- ven‘ion, at the court house in this city to nominate a candidate for the county ticket. Mr. J. C. Morgan called the con. vention to order, and nominated as chairman Judge E. E. Aylesworth, who, on taking the position, seriously avoided making a speech. Mr. A. B. Higgine, of Neola, was chosen necretary. On motion of G. Holmes, Robert F. Rain was choren assistant secretary. On wotion of Mr. Stone, a com mittes of threo was appointed on credentiale, eaid committee consieting of C. E. Swne, I M. Siegler and James Crow, 3 A motion for a fifteen minuto recess was lost, and oo the suggestion of Mayor Bowman Mr. John Ahlcs was callod out for a speech and intreduced a3 a former greenbacker, who had now come into camp and taken a seat in this convention as a delegate. M. Ahles responded in a very enthusias- tic speech, and took special oc:asion to “‘nmil « lie to the wall,” said lie being that Mr. Pusey had been in- strumental in forcing German out of of the schools, as a drive against that nationalivy. He knew that Mr. Pusey was in favor of educating the masses. The speaker believed that it was bet- ter o educate the poor man’s child in good English than to use up the means in teaching a few German, French, drawing ard other artificial acquire- ments. Mr, Pusey believed the same. Mr. Ahles spoke enthusiasiically ot Mr. Pusey’s record as standing up in favor of the people and against taxa- tion for railwayr. He showed that Mr. Pusoy had shown himself the friend of the poor. He aiso” discussed the prohibitory quention somewhat, sud claimed that prohibition wou d not be carried out in the large citivs, and would be in the small cities, The mouney would pour into the large cities, theretore, and this was a discriminating measure, therefore.
