Brown's rural conception descriptive of “‘Edgewood Folks” was given to an Omaha audience for the first time last night by Sol Smith Rus- sell and his excellent pastoral comedy company. It is a rest and most pleas- ant diversion to atiend the theatre when the performance makes you lose all identity with yourself and sur. roundings; but it is hard work to find yourself lost that way to-day. It tukes careful handling to make an actor's part seem anything but weak or overdrawn, and yot if his portrayals do not abound with mingled rage or the most cor sayings he scarcely sucoeeds in cffecting an elovation, Mr. Ruesell works for himself, and yet is as sincere as any character actor on the etage to-day. Alwsys droll and at times most ridiculous, he never seems to be working for applause from the ‘‘upper tiera” or for anything in the least melodramatic. His play is one of those that pleases the masses aud is never criticised, Like most of the starring pieces of to-day, it was written to suit the peculiarities of Mr, Ruasell; indescribably funny, simple and wholesome, The support was good, house large, and audience pro- portivuately enthusiastic.
