Some of our ve sels wore alongeido and there queer yarne put_about s to the scom inganxioty of the United States com mander to have a spoon in that hot dish - curry, it might bo calted —which ho has boen at some pains to deny. However that may have been, the English at home were vastly pleased with the sympathy and applauss which the Yankeo eailors gave the British ships and geamen in that brush, al- though hore at home there wasa strong impression that the com- modore had beon making & fool of himself. The eighty-ton guus of the English flaet made short work of the fortiflaations, but the question arises: How would the American sh made out if thoy had job! We have men enough and offi- cers who would o rande as record for themselves as did the lishmen. Tho Yankeo navy may be very small in the matter of shipe, but when it comes to oticers and wen, they will hold their own with any maritime power in tho world, How much of & navy the repablic really needs is a mogted question, That it should be better than it is may bs said to bs an axiom. We are not much in danger of a foreign war, and proba- bly should have small use floating forirvssca as tho dorer or the Iuflaxible, the tim como wt want of than would be thau the worth of them. For swift, armored cruiscrn, doubtlees, the eoun- try has a use, and thoe idea of naval improyement secms to run in that di- rection. No Robeaons, however, should have charge of the job of get- ting them up. Tho great Powers of Europo have done a large amount of maritime experimenting in the past itteon years by which we can profit The torpedo service loozus largely upon the horizon as a harbor defense Big a8 the Thunderor is, and massive an are her armored sides and turretted guns, a Whitehead torpedo or two would have *‘ettled her hash,” as the saying ie, if they had over got under her bo: In view of all this discussion about the navy aud naval affaire, tho recent Register of the Navy of the United Stater, published by the Navy Do- partment, 1ssued from the government printing ofiico at \Vnn?ingtnn, and showing the conditions of affsirs down to July 1st of the current year, has an immediate interest. It is a psmphlet of eighty-one pages, and smeil though it is, affords considerable food for thought. It gives a list of the com- missioned, warrant snd volunteer offi- cors, the officers of the marine corps and the State from which they hail, their present location, pay, ete., and also a list of the vessels of the navy, armamont, condition and looation, A look at the personnel of the navy will be of interest.
