ITS ELEMENTS AS SHOWN BY CORRECTED COMPUTA- TIONS—SUPPOSED IDENTITY WITH THE COMETS OF 1843 AND 1880—DANGER OF ITS BEING ERECIPITATED ON THE SOLAR SURFACE, From observations made at the Naval Observa- tory on the 19th, 20th and 2st instant, Dr. Mor- rison, of the Nautical Almanac office, has com- puted the elements of the orbit of the comet which was visible to the naked eye a few days ago near the sun. The observations have been cor- rected for parallax and aberration, the latter being very important ta the present case, and therefore the following elements of the orbit are considered to be more accurate than any others hitherto pub- ished, in Which the corrections have Lot been applied, ‘he interval between the observations is quite too short to admit of a tery accurate de- termination of the orbit, Perihelion passage, September, 17 days 2 hrs, 97 m. p.m., Wash- ington mean time; longitude perl- helion,, g78° 2; | lonigitude of ascending node, °7'.6; referred to the mean equinox of 1882.0} fon, 39° 4.2; logarithm of perihelion dis- tance, 7.77391, which corresponds to 554,350 miles, the sun’s distance being taken at $8,800,000 miles. Motion retrograde. RECEDING FROM THE EARTH. ‘The comet’s distance fro. the earth on Septem- ber 19 day, 2 bts. 36 m. p.m., was 103,620,000 miles, and on September 21 duy, 11h. @ m., it was 107,460,- 000 miles, from which !t is seen that the comet 1s Tapidly receding from the earth. ‘The comet's velocity at perthelion was 892 miles per second, and at the time of the observation on Uhe 2ist inst. 1t had reeeded to such an enormous distance trom the sun thatits velocity was reduced to.56 milan per ennend “Tho middie place of Observation ts not, es well represented by the computation as it ought to be, supposing the orbit to be a parabola. | Itis, there- fore, highly probable that the orbit is an ellipse, Which, however, subsequent observation, embrac- ng Tonigcr intervals, will easily devermine, | * the Orbit of this comet is, according to the pre- ceding elements, almost identical with that of the great comet of 1818, whose elements, reduced to the same equinox, are as follows: Perthelion pas- sage, 1868, February 2% day, 9.8h.; longitude ot eFihelon, 279° 11'.5; longitude of ascending node, © 46"; inclination, 4° 40'.6; logaritum of perthe- lion distance, 7.74837; eccentricity, 0.9999 10- tion, retrograde. It also almost coincides with the orbit of the comet of 1880, and if subsequent in- ‘vestigations show that these THREE COMETS ARE IDENTICAL, it 1s evident that the comet must have experi- enced great resistance during its previous peri- helfon passages in order to have its periodic time reduced from 46 years to two years, and that be- fore two or threé more revolutions shall have been performed the comet will be pereipitated on the solar surface. It 1s dificult to say What the result of such a collision willbe, since there is little or nothing known of the mass or quantity of matter ia the Comet. ‘That 1 would be Toilowed able outburst of solar heat 1s absolutely but whether its intensity would in- Seriously with vezetable and animal life on the surface of our planet, there 1s no means at present of determining.
