The jail building is to be loca- ted on the extreme north part of the property, and thirty feet back from Bryant street, 8o as to leave room for the ercction of a market hall, which in due time will be built there and which is another improvement needed, The plans show a very neat brick building, having a frontage of about thirty feot and & depth of forty-two feot. It is to be two stories in height, with @ corner tower three stories high. As ono entors the front door there is a vestibule 10 by 12 feot, and from thero one enters a public room of about the same mize, whero the gang of lookors-on who usually cluster around a station when anything is going on, can be accommodated with standing room. A noat rail separates them from the office, which is about 16 feet square, which' will sorve as police headquarters, clerk’s desk, ete. Back of these and running the entire width of the building is to boa corridor, with wash sink and bath room. At the rear of the building, with doors open- ing into this corridor, are three cells and one steel cell for desperate charac tors, Thene colls are six by eight foot and between them and the outward wallis a space of two feet, so that prironers cannot very well work their way out through the iron to tho brick walls, moking juil breaks almost impossible, These cells aro arranged with water clogots, aud the whole building is to be com- pletely drained into a sewer omptying itself into Indian cr 5 The plana for the s for several ce re, but it soems Lo bo the generai opinion of the oflicials and aldermen that it would be better for the present not to divide it in‘o colls but loave it as one large room, to be used by the council and by the suprome court until such time 8 the proposed city building and warket hall can be built, which it is to be hoped will not be far in the future, Thus the building wil be made to sorve the purpose of & city hall as well as polics headauarters and jail, for the present. the floor of the jail is to be made of Porand coment, aud so arranged that it can readily be cleaned out by being washed with a hose, and it ia thought that with the drainage ar- ranged for, and the water supply the wholo can bo kept cloanly and healthy, The plans are drawn by P, J. The proposed action has stirred up tho surgeons who would thus be set back, and they are mani- festing much indignation about the matter. A well known tailor of this city had occasion to order some tools that are used in his calling, aud he occupied tha greater portion of the week in figuring out the correct language to be used. He began: “‘Dear Sir: Please send me two tail- or’s goose.” He saw that his English was not embonpoint, but very certeorl, and ho changed it to: “Ploase send me two tailors’ geese.” This was not the pink of speech that he wanted, so he changed it to read: “‘Send me a couple of tailoring fowis.” Hoe felt that this was a little shaky in the upper register, and in disgust ho gave up the order. Presently an iden struck him about the same way the Chicago whitefhoisery boys pound a tossed ball, and he took his pen in hand, and wrote: ““You will please send mo a tailor's goose.” P, 8,—(partlcularly the P. and es- pecialiy 8.) The Harvest Moon. Providence Journal, e The September moon fills on the 27th at 12:26 &. m, Itie the beauti- ful harvest moon, and possesses 8pe- cial elaim to distinct For, owing to the position of the ecliptic in regard to the equator at this season, the moon riees for several consecutive nighta with ogly a comparatively small interval b®ween the successive risings. The short autumnal days soem thus to be prolonged by the floods of silvery moonlight that make the night beantiful as day. The phenomenon is o8 easily explained ua the axial rotation of the earth But in tho olden times, when man was nearer to nature, the harvest moon was considered a direct interpo- sition of providence to assist the hus- baudman tn gathering in the harvest. The wanlng moon is in conjuction with Neptune on the 2d, with Saturn on 34, with Jupiter on the Oth, and with Uranus on the 12th, The new moon of the 12tk is in conjunction with Mercury and Mars on the 14th and with Venus on the 16th, passing a degree and a half north of her.
