The Chinese lodge is less tha: two years old, but it now has 308 members. Its formation was due largely to the « florts of Deputy Sher iff lom Lee and the Chinese inter. preter, Jean Baptista, aided by eight other Chinamen less publicly known than they. It is fairly well understood now, however, by students of Masonic rit- ualism, that there is a grand lodge of Masous in the Celestial empire, and that the emperor, ca well as his grand aecretary, who did the honors to Gen. Grant, and lately introduced the first telegraph line into China, with many others about the court, are Masons, As to just how near the ritual adop. ted by the grand lodge comes to the vitual in vogue among Masons in the United States, and how and when Maso ry was introduced into China, there is great diversity of opinion Some authorities incline to the belief that the ritual adopted by the Chinese was one used by eastern Masons at the bevinning of the present century. Another authority says that Free- masonry has become widespread, and publications of a Masonic character are bandied abour so loosely, that it 18 not diflicult for any one to become familiar with the secrets, and his juference is based on that. Ocher authorities than that Chivamen have been initia- ted into Masonic lodges in the east, aud 1 the conrse of time have fallen out of them, and thus used their experieuces aud knowledge to a good account n forming lodges in their own country. Those who have this opinion ¢ uut a great deal on the imi tative faculty ot the celestial, rather than on a well balanced, retentive memory. If such be the case, Frev Musous wo ild expect to find a simi- lurity of sizus, symbols and forms in the lodges «f the Chinese, rather than in the words or names of the officers. The lodge in this city was insticuted by request from the grand lodge of California, which got its chaster from the graud lodge in China. Lodges are established in towns wherever there 18 a corsiderable gathering of Chinamen. In Havaua they are nu- merous In Chicago and St. Louis it is thought that thero is one each, if not more. In the principal cities of Cahfornia there are many, The master who orgamzed the lodge in this civy, under authoricy from the grand lodge, 18 Yung Hin Til. He is uow absent from the eity, having been in the westeru states on business for over three months. In the meantime the deputy master acta. Yung Hung Til was chosen master for a second term, it 18 said, becauss no member had yet become so familiar as he with the mysteries of Masoury. The lodge hus now arrived at that period when the members believe that they can do better by eularging their accomoda- tions, There is not room enough, the ufficers say, for the large number that come to the lodge-room, and there is a desire t> secure some large house in Mott street, but there is none to be had. Property in that neighberheod is leased to Chinamen, but no part of it is large enough to accommodate the lodge. Jean Baptiste, the interpreter, says that ceremouies in the lodge are almost siwilar to those in lodges of other masons in_ the city. He does not know wherein they differ except possibly in the namng of the officers. Ivisin the by-laws of the Oniness lodge that curiosity is aroused. There was a time 1 this country when it was supposed by non-Masous that one Mason was supposed to do almost any- thing that another asked him to do A consideration of the by laws of the Chinese will go a great way to make that supposition good. A Chinese Mason wust do all in his power to help a brother Mason., He must not establish a laundry within two blocks of a brother, and must uade every other Chivaman from doing so. i he should be so unfortunate as to fail in busivess, he must be helped and put on his feet. If non-Masons crowd him, they must be talked to and requested to wait the coming of better times for the pay- ment of their claims. Should they still persist, payment is made by a wealthy member, or out of the lodge funds, No one has been known to be recr ant in this trust, If a China- man who is a Mason should stab or otherwise assault another Chinaman who is also a Mason, everything in their power should bo done by the members of the lodge to tide over the difliculty and secure the release of the Chinuwan, The large force of China- men that asked permussion of Justice Kilbreth to speak with the assailant of Gam Wah and his wife, some time ago, had no other motive than to koow his standing in China, aud whether he was a Mason. Should a Chinese Mason owe a brother Magon any sum, he must not sue in the courts for the recovery of that sum, but he must put the matter in the hands of the Arbitration com- mittee of the lodge. If the creditor insists on prompt payment, and the dehtor has it not, then he is to receive it from the lodge. The latter course has seldom beer. resorted to, Chinese Masonry inculcates among its mem- bers teeling of kindness, goodness and fraternity. It is not alone a Ma- sonic by-law, but it is a general con- sideration with Chinamen, that they help one another. The Chinese Mason must believe ina God, the same as a Christian. Al of the 303 are mem- bers of some church. Most of them are Methodi but there are Presby- terlans, Episcopalians and Baptists | — among them. Baptista did not know it for a fact that the highest court cfficials of China are Masons. He had only heard of it, but to his mind it was one indica- tion of the progress made by Chris- tianity, A favor might have been ex- tended to the emperor's court officials.
