2 THE DAILY BEE----T('VP DAY, AT:(;_UST 22_!58‘. Egeee———— BOOTH'S GRAVE. A Visit to the Last Resting Place of President Lin- coln’s Assnesin, The True Story of the Final Interment of the Body. ‘Washington Cot Cincinn: tt Commerci | W hen in Baltimore T made a special pilgrimage to Green Mount cemetery, out on the York road (which 1s called Green Mount avenue till the cemetery in paesed) for the sake of meeing the burial place of the Booths, This an cient God’s acre is 80 pamed becauze it i®*literally a green mount, or rather mounds. The growth of the city 18 fast encroaching upon it, and in A short time it will be within its closely built limits, surrounded by busy trade and, possibly by noisy factories, 1n ateafl of the quiet seclusion one loves to associate with those who, after life’s fitful fever, are supposed to sleep well. Green Mount was once an ideal local ity for a city of the dead, and is still wvery beautiful Not many years ago it wasa lovely vale, with wooded spots and open fields, from the center of which rose the great green mound that overlooks the monumental city. White marble shafts gleam through the trees upon all its slopes, and upon its apex stands the crowning monu- ment-—a pinnacled chap:l of carved brown stone, with the symbol of the cross, like a giant pencil tracing si- lently upon the sky the Christian's hope of immortality, On the side of the slope which faces the city, in company with a number of at the time. ill, in view of all the rumors sfloat, the identity of the re- mains was not sufficiently established to satisfy his frionds, especially as there was no portion of the spinal vertebri missing, and fo mark of any bullet upon them. Booth’s brother, Edwin, was thon sent for and requested to T out some p culiarity, if any existe”, by which the body eould be identified beyond a doubt, After considerable meditation the brother said he could remember but one peculiarity, which was that John Wilkes had a tooth plugged with gold in a singular manver, He described the location of the tooth and drew, with his pencil, the shape of the plug, which was of unusual si So the teeth of the skeleton were taken out and the plugged tooth was found exactly as described, and thus the mooted question was forever sottled, He was said to have been the hand- somest man in the United Strates, and the curling dark hair which has caused 80 many young ladies to lose their hearts, was still beautiful among the mouldering bones in the old army blunket, and several locks were taken for his mother and friends. Thern was considerable stir made at the timoe about the burial of his body in any consecrated ground, but as the cemetery was fres to all who might purchese a lot (excopt colored people) it could not well be prevented, and the grave was origimally guardea for monthe to protect it from surreptitious desecration. Perhaps in one of our northern cities it would not have been possible to bury the proeident’s assassin so quietly—at least not then;batthe softening touch of time has long since obliterated any desire for revenge upon mere dead dust, and other polished shafts, oach urn or | that “tho world do move” i proven figure-ctowned, stands THE BOOTH MONUMENT. Three rough-faced and massive blocks of granite sustain the shaft, upon the front of whioh, in bold re: lief, is cut the one word: BOOTH, While around the base, almoat hiding the foundation stone, a mass oi creep- ing ivy springs from a mound at the toot. A single rose bush grows be- fore this grave, where rests tho elder Booth, Upon the base of the marble, in bas relief, above his dust, appears the faco of him to whose memory the stone was erected, Beiow is this in- seriptio Behold the spot where Junius lies! Oh, drop a tear when talent dies! Of 'tragedy the mighty chief, Thy power to plea-e surpassed beliof: Hic jacet, matchless Booth! Upon the face of the shaft, to the left, are the words: : JUNIUS BRUTUSBOOTH : H bony Mary 1, 1796, 3 EMBER 30, Tt took considerable search to dis- cover the grave of this gifted man’s son—John Wilkes Booth, th» mur- derer of Lincoln—who inberited mach of his father’s genius, a dangerous gift unlees well balanced by common sense. At the back ot the lot, close to the fence, on the fourth side of the " marble obelisk which bears the above ‘insdriptions, is this simple announce- ment; To'the memory of the children * of Junius Brutus and Mary Ann Booth, 5 John Wilkes, f : Frederick, Elizabeth, » Mary Ann, Henry By At the foot of this side of the monument 18 & second ivy-covered mound, and upon it grows a single rosebush, exactly like that upon the father's grave, The siugle line, {JOHN WILKES,* In the list of dead children is the only record telling that the man who aimed the fatal shot is buried here. There are no otbes o, not evetl the -+ : <8 of birth or death—no more recognition of him than of his broth- ers anc sistors who died in infancy. As soon after his death as the family conld get permiesion from the govern- ment te remove the body (which was not for some time, you remember), it was brought here and his name carved upon the stone, as indicated above. A great many absurd stories have been going the rovnds as to the final dispo- sition of his remains, the latest of which is that the body was sunk in the river seven miles below here, near Alexandria, Beside the section of spinal column which is shown in the museum, an eminent physician of this city uses a peculiar but not very beau- tiful ink bottle, made of a human skull, which is currently reported to have belonged to Booth. 1In fact, if all the “‘remains” which are said to have been a part of him are genuiue, he would have had more lives than a cat, and Gabriel, toot he never so loudly on the last day, will never be able to get him together ain. The incontrovable truth is :fi' The remains were temporarily deposited in the Arsenal buildings, until PresidentJohnson ordered them to be delivered to the Booth family; whereupon, Mr. John Weaver, & Bal- timore undertaker, was sent to con- vey them to that ocity. Upon his arrival at the Arsenal, a box was taken up and delivered to Mr. Weaver, pur- porting to contain the corpse he came for, He conveyed it to Baltimore, where the rude coflin was opened and found to contain a ekeleton, WEAPPED IN AN OLD ARMY BLANKET, upon removing which, the bones were found to be completely covered with a powder-like substance, having the ap- pearance of soap-stone, and which disappeared on being rubbed between the fingers, as that mineral will do, On the right foot was an army ehoe, cut open at the top its entire length, as if to accommodate a swollen foot On the other was a large alry boot. The leg was broken just above the ankle, the fracture being clearly marked. The portion below 1t being lifted out of the box, showed the onds of the bones to be perfeotly white, thus leaving no doubt as to the fact that when Booth leaped from the president’s box to the stage, be broke his right leg, instead of sprainiag it, as was generally supposed by the fact that you read the letter— which seventeen years ago if one had dared to write nobody would have been found to publish—in a leading papor of the foromost abolition state! Everything about Booth's last rest- ing place reminds one of him—the poor handful of dust that managed to work 80 much miechief during its short life, All this broad panorama of nctivity—the city stretching out to the waters of the river which joins the great Chesapeake in carrying the commerce of a busy port out to sea— in inseperably connccted with him, for in tho midst of it he was born, only about forty-two years ago, though his career hus been ended seventeen long years! This Booth monument formerly stood in the old Baltimore cemetery, whore it marked the resting place of Junius Brutus Booth only. Toward the close of the war Edwin Booth and his mother (who still lives) bought this lot and removed the remains and the marble to this spot. Later the coffius of the children were taken up from the old Booth homestead, in Hartford county, that all might sleep together, The lot containing these graves is framed by a low stone coping, witt granite posts at each of the four cor- ners. Close to each post grows a beautiful pine tree, nicely shaped and trimmed, showing evidence of careful attention, To the right of the monu- ment, on a corner of the same inclos- ure, 18 an old marble headstone, show- ing that the insidious ““tooth of Time" has been busy, which marks the grave of Joln Wilkes’ grandfather, Richard Booth, who died in 1839, Fannie B, Warp, ‘When There's a Will There' Way. Anyone who has the will to try THoMAs' B crrio Oin will surely find the way to robust health, in cases of bronchial affee- tions, sore throat, pains, etc.: and as an internal reniedy, it is invalusble. aug22-lw LIST OF LETTERS Remaining in Postoffice during the week ending August 10, 1882, GENTLEMEN.
