A new step has been taken by sbe Oneida community, which leade in the diréction of 1's fins] dismemberme: It has been decided to convert it into a jolntstock eompany. Hiretoforo its property has been held in trust by four mem. bere, but every member in the com- shared alike in its privileges any distinction made vount of the property which had been brought in, thvu.h some had contrib- uted ttonsands where others hadhun. dreds. The de- tails of the allotments have not yet beon made, but the organizion is n longer a communi.y, but a joiut stock company. The pmo hias come when the intido his‘ory of this curicus or- ganization may be wictten. IT HAS ATIRACTED WeRLD WiDE AT- TENTION, and its bistory will form & curicus chapter in its way. The Oacida com- wunity was an offshost from the revi ent, whith commenced | about the year 1832 in New Haven. The leader was John Humphrey con in of Ruik g I hails from Ver- ,and is conneeted with many people of noto 1n New Englaad by | tlood and marrisge. Noyes was n perfectionist, and the doctrines he in- culcated were thuse of the orthodox Christian church. His teaching: avowedly based upor apostles and the ap stolic church, wh had at one time *‘all things in com- mon.” This new sect a that Christ did ectually reap; o r afier the destroction of Jerusalem, and the church which He instituted was the literal kingdom of Henven, where there was ro marrying or givi marrage. It was this the which accounts fur their pec liar family notion. The doctrines «f the new sect were first promulzated in Putney, Vt., but created so much judice that they finally wont to Brc lyn N. Y. Eventually a eettlement w-s made in Oneida, at that time very very remote from civilizs Th was in the year 1848. Tie orisina nuclevs when they seftled in On:ida numbered only forty persozs. For many years the Perfectionists soffered great privations. They were poor but z-alous, yet they flourished nntil their nuwbers increased to over 300, Many of the things which have sinte nttrac: ted the attention of the olry orig inated with tha Oneida community. Thoy were the wearers and apostles of short dresses for women. Mrs. Blaom er really got herattire, the one called after her name, from the tromen of the Oneida commonity, sho wore shori dr.2s ad cut the hairsbort before the movement in favor of semi masculine h:biliments gained such favor among women’s rights poople. At first the Oneida commanity excited AVERSION ANONG THEIR NEIGEBORS, but alter a time they were shrewd enough to conciliate outside p: opivion by employing the sona daughters of the n in their various also bought largely of the fruits an vegetables which their nuighbors raiserd, and as they never attempred to carry their gocial practices outside of their own_orgenizition, as paid their debts and were kindly neig they wot the gocd opinion of the ra gion in which they lived. They nover voted, slthough they checrfully paid their taxes, and hence no lecsl or po- litical prejudice was arrayed against them Their rgally prosperous period was when they wero poor. Often in debt, sometimes suffering even priva- tion, yet they hcld together, in- creased in numbers, and in_the end prospered inevery wsy. They found what s}l communities had dis- covered before them, that farmi was unprofitable business; eo they turned their attention to manufactor- tes. Ifono did notpuy, they tried anotber. Their first aitempt was in making traps for wild animals. They attempted carpet and leather bag making, but could not_compete with other manufacturers, and had to sur- render the business. Then they tried silk thread manufacturing, and here they had & very fair degree of suc- cess. They cwnned fruits also, and vegetables, snd this brought them in large sums, for they secared the cou- fidencoe of their customers by always supplying a good arttcle. At length they established a BRANCH AT WALLINGFORD, TI00T. Here they undertook printing as well as silk mauufacturiog, bat there industries were not remunerative. At leugth, however, they established a manufacture for matalware (spoons and the ltke) which bas been y profitable. As they became easy in circumstances some of tho members thought that their children should re- ceive a better education, and the moet promising of the young men were sent to the Sheffield School of Mines at New Haven. [This was the first mis- take. Some of the young men so educated left the commuoity, whils others returned imbued with very hetorodox_notions, smong_them Dr. Thecdore Noyes, 8 son of the founder of this curous organiz.tion. He was under the teaching of Professor Barker, and instead of (he orthodox Protestantism which was the characteristic of his father's creed, he imbibed certsin scientitic notions, which were subversive not only to Protestantism, but of all faith. Then commenced the real difficullies of the community, for up to that time they had been of cne faith, of one mind, and no member was disposed to question the inspirstion or lesdership of John Humphrey Noyes. There have been but two deaths among the children born in the community, and those from malformation. This is an extraordinary fact, as ordlnarily one- balf the children die before the age of five. Nor have their children been subject to the diseases which afflict the littte ones outside. Whooping cough, measles, mumps and the other ills to which ordinary infantile flesh fs heir, have o far been nnknown in the Onelda community. For many years few or no additions from the outside world were permitted at Oneida. It was foared that the special training which made the members obedient to THE PECULIAR DISCIPLINE OF THE PLACE would not be suited to new members. It is a remarkable fact that many young and apparently respectable Women from all parts of the country wished to obtain admission into the organization, but it wss found upon examination that it was discontented husbands or discoutented wives who generally presented themselves as candidates, and the commuuity rights Iy argued that people who were re- bellious wuder the restraints of ordi- nary matrimony wera not likely per- | eons to rest satistied under their sys- tem_of complex marriage, as it was called.
