Difference in Coin Values. ‘Spocial Dispateh to The Kee. New Yorg;*October 20,1 a m — A case that ia impartant in the result « to importers, came te trial yesterday in the United States circvit court, be- fore Judge Shipmanrand jurg. It re- lates to tne silver question, nd was transferred from the treasusy depart- ment to the United States courts. The fac's are these: The deprecation in valge of rilver in 1879 and lSBOL was disregarded by the tressury de- partment in its instractions to collec- tors of customs, and no substantial change wes made in its estimate of foreign silver coins, though the latter were purchnscd at the mint at only their actual bullion vals Thus, af- ter the patsage of the silver bij, the Mexican dollar, which is the currency in which invoices from China are usu- ally mads out, was valued by compa ing it with United Scates silver dol- largcf 412 grains. If it had been uoted, however, by c.mparisop with the gold doliar, the result would have been much less in American dollars. Importers, therefors, bringing goods from countries whose currency is sil- ver, isisted that this government should correct their invoices into American gold doll: This dispute involved a difference of about 15 per cent of the dutiable valae cf invoices in silver currency. The government in 1879 fixed $1.015 as the value, for instance, of the Mexican dollar, in- stead of abcut 86 cents, fis actusl valu~, After the matter had been argued before the' treagiry for some months by lawyers empldyed by mer- chants, the director of {He fuint s to the conc'usion that they wereright, and in January, of the present year, lie changed all public estimateson for- eign silver coins, and fixed them at the actual gold value. It is ex- pected that a large number of experts will be put on the stand, and the trial will last some weeks. How We Grow.
