A party of relatives and friends numbering 20 assembled at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fioyd S. Russell of the Pequotsepor road. Stonington. Thursday evening, Sept. 20, to give Mrf. Russell a pieasant surprise on his 534 birthday anniversary. Mrs. Russell and_Miss Hazel Russell a Tanged for the partv. The proceeds will be used for church-expenses. Returns to Virgini Charles Seeley of St. Louis, who a few months ago enlisted in the U. S. army, returned Sunday to his camp in Virginia after a brief furlough spent here with Mrs. Seeley and their chbildren Evelyn and Robert, who are staying for a time at the home of Mrs. Seeley’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Lamb. The “Get Together” night at the Congregational was enjoyed by about fifty persons. The first part of the program consisted of the singing of patriotic songs led by piano and vio- lin. The music included piano solo by Miss Dorothy Brown and a vocal duet by Misses Julia Guild and Maynard Sherman with violin obligato by Paul Hopl®ns and accompanied on the pi- ano by Miss Gertrude Armold, Rev. M. R. Plumb outlined a plan of ser- vices for Friday evenings until Jan- uary 1st. H. C. Lathrop spoke for the Sunday school and Mrs. Pegrum for the W. M. S. Rev. R. S. Moore of Wiili- mantic was heard here for the first time and was listened to with close attention and much pleasure. Rev. E. P. Aver of Mansfield Centre was also present and spoke a few words. The program closed with the singing of the Star Spangled Banner. Cocoa and wafers were served. Slackers in Red Cross Effort. The interest in Red Cross work seems to be waning and only a few of the faithful ones have been at the rooms the past two or three weeks. Some of the members who can not come to the rooms to sew are doing good work by knitting at home. but there are others who are not doing anything. Miss Mary Frink has gone to tleboro, Mass. for a month. Mrs. W. S. Chappell has returned from a_ten days visit with her sis- ter in Vermont. 2 Timothy Marra is an attendant at #» Wethersfield state prison. His mother will board in Willimantic. Good- win Waterohs who returned to the Fessenden school in West Newton. Library Canvass. The town is being canvassed to raise its portion of the million dollars fund for books for the soldiers. Mrs. Ada Larrabee is the guest of her uncle, Frank Larrabee in Groton. Mrs: Jessie Cook has been the guest of her cousin, Rev. M. R. Plumb. Special Sunday Address. Sunday morning the address at the Congregational church will be given by Rev. James H. Roberts, a field secre- tary of the Lord’s Day League of New England. His subject will be Personal Liberty as to Sabbath-keeping. Mr. Roberts will speak in South Windham on. Sabbath-keeping and Sunday laws. The leader and topic for the C. E. meeting will be the one given for Sept. 23d. The lecture last week taking the place of the C. E. ‘At the Friday evening service this week Rev. M. R. Plumb gave an ad- dress on the Congresational family tree. 'He gave the same address in Mansfield Centre Thursday evening. Next Friday evening the study classes will begin, the aduit class taking up Pilgrim_Deeds and Duties and _the young people’s class will study Hero tales of Pilgrim history. The local team will be matched against the nine of the Connecticut Mills, of Danielson. Last Saturday there was ‘a bag of errors filled more or less by both teams.
