MORRIS, EDITOR Many persons have to be convinced by Leader advertising representatives before .an advertising ‘contract is signed. ~The manufacturer usually has an 1 advertising’ agent or broker who places his ads for him. This is easy when the acent has not been T T e o prejudiced in advance against the Leader by the attacks of the press and poli- ticians on the organized farmers’ program. It is easy because the Leader can show the advertising agent by experience figures of other advertisers that Leader ads pull better than ads in any other paper reaching the farmer. . * ,But after the advertising agent is “sold” the manufacturer himscif usually has’to be convinced. The agent realizes that he may be criticized for putting ads in the Leader. So many powerful financial interests®are opposing the farmers’ program that the agent, while himself convinced; more often than not likes to get the O. K. of the manufacturer himself before giving us the busi- ness. This is not the case with other farm papers. The agent is rot afraid to put ads in other farm papers without getting the specific O. K. of the manu- facturer himself. But we usually have to convince the manufacturer as well as his agent. The results that the Leader is able to get advertisers, due to your interest in the paper and your loyalty to those who help your cause by doing business with the Leader, as often as not convince the manufacturer. He wants to do business and make money and is usually interested only sec- | ondarily in “politics.” i ; 3 So we “sell” the manufacturer too. But we are not through then. We still have to run the gauntlet of the local dealers and traveling men who sell the product to be advertised. The other day both the manufacturer and the adver- tising agent of an important product agreed to run ads in the Leader. A few local dealers, handling this broduct, when they heard we were to print the ads, protested. - These local dealers were hostile political enemies of the organized farmers. They were in small towns where there was a bitter spirit against the Nonpartisan league. They declared they would no longer handle the product of the manufacturer if he advertised it in the Leader. They knew Leader ads would make them money, as well as the manufacturer, .but they hated the farmers and their program so bitterly. that they would. rather lose money than seem to help your cause by approving advertising in the Leader. The manu- | facturer was immediately scared off. We lost the business. ; ; Another case a few weeks ago had an opposite result. We “sold” the agent and manufacturer. A dealer protested. He said it was “helping: Town- ley” to use the Leader and “Townley was a crook.” We overcame the influence of this dealer by getting a dozen other dealers handling the product in North Dakota and other strong League territory to urge use of the Leader. The Twin Cities dealer was outvoted and we won. - Jiti Many ads are gotten by us under similar circumstances. Do not you farmers, whose program we are fighting for, owe it to us, to yourselves and to the principle of a free press, to do ALL THE BUYING YOU CAN through our advertisers?
