Leading Denver Minister States Boldly the Reasons for His Belief in Farmers’ Organization Gy G The Rev. Mr. Lackland is pastor of the Grace Methodist church of Denver, Col., one of the largest and most powerful churches of the city. Mr. Lackland has always been a leading - fighter for social Jjustice for both. farmers and workers. Through his influence at the recent Colo- rado Methodist conference 24 mrinisters of that church delivered sermons immediately prior to the Colorado primaries, answering lying attacks made against the Nonparti- san league. BY REV. J. 8. LACKLAND AM for the Nonpartisan league, first, because it stands for home owners. Men will not be patriotic for apartments or board- ing houses. - They will be for homes that they own. If yellow . journals that scream about the Non- partisan league were as desirous of re- vealing some of the rent and realty profiteers that advertise so lavishly they would be nearer the hearts of the common people. ; A I am for the Nonpartisan league be- cause it has been_giving the working- man a square deal. They told the lob- by of the State Federation of Labor to go home and not only gave them what they asked but more than they asked. The workmen’s compensation law is the best in the United States today. Rev. J. S. Lackland of Denver. Col. In addition they have passed an eight- coal inspection bill, a limitation on the issuance of in- junctions, full train crews, unién label on state printing and many others. I am for the Nonpartisan league be- cause it stands for the consumer. I am for the Nonpartisan league be- cause it has taken a genuine interest in the public schools. Governor Lynn J. Frazier’s hobby is better schools and he has gone throughout the state advo- cating consolidated schools. These schools are the true community cen- ters. In fact, the Nonpartisan league itself is an extension course in prac- tical econgmics and citizenship, which is causing thousands of men who cared nothing for civic duty to realize that the community can not be saved unless they co-operate intelligently. I believe absolutely in the patriotic Americanism of the people of North Dakota. If it is un-American or Bol- shevik for the state to own a bank then the staid Republicans should so class Alexander Hamilton, who drew § once. Send him_ a card today.—Adv. up plans and advocated “The Bank of the United States.””~ B I believe the Nonpartisan program is an honest attempt to put genuine democratic brotherhood into practice. It will make mistakes, but.what move- ment will not? To date there has been an honest willingness to correct mis- takes. It organizes the common peo- ple into a fighting unit for justice. It is a foe of every social evil that en- dangers the home or civic life of the state. It is placing a new and true value on human life. Tts object is to make home owners and to make prof- iteers nonexistent. In this it is suc- ceeding beyond the fondest dreams of its advocates. £ 3 LEAGUE PROGRAM IS “REAL CHRISTIANITY” As a churchman, believing in the social creed of the church, which stands for “equal rights and complete justice for all men in all stations of life; for the fullest possible develop- ment of every child; for the abatement and prevention of poverty; for the right of all men to opportunity for self-maintenance; for a new emphasis upon the application of Christian prin- ciples to the acquisition and use of property,” I can not see how any church that is not socially color blind can help but welcome the crusade of the Nonpartisan league. ‘In St. Paul a convention, represent- ing thousands of farmers, stated as its aim: (1) The making of the govern- ment responsive to the will of the peo- ple; (2) to eradicate:special privi- lege; (8) to raise the standards -of citizenship. ; 2 If this be bolshevistic then every true American who cares for the free- dom for which our forefathers died will be so branded. The true colors for such principles are not red, but red, white and blue, and the opponents of such ideals should boldly announce themselves as sailing under the black flag of piracy. BRIBERY IN BUSINESS For several years the federal trade commission has been agitating against commercial bribery and is now urging congress to legislate against it as a crime. By commercial bribery is meant thé securing of sales through offering bribes of different kinds to buying agents or vice versa and the securing of more advantageous pur- chases through similar bribery of sell- ing agents. 3 The commission quotes a business man in an important line as saying: ~- “From an experience of 30 years in the industry I don’t believe there is a single house that has not had to pay bribes to hold its old business and to obtain new business.” - Another form of dishonesty, so com- - mon as to be regarded as proper in most business circles, is the plan whereby powerful officers in one cor- poration will form another to furnish the first some service at higher than market costs. ! .
