In spite of the diversity of race and products among the farmers of South Africa they have organized a Federated Farmers’ Co-Operative association of local co-operatives which have a com- bined capital strength of £2,000,000 (nearly $10,000,000). Government aid to the farmers comes in the form of an initial appro- priation of £100,000 ($500,000) for the beginning of a publicly owned and operated elevator system. Trade Com- missioner Lundquist reports this amount in the budget for the coming year. The local co-operatives are formed by farmers of both English and Dutch descent. Their products include such widely ~ diversified types as wheat, wine, meat, butter and cheese, wool, ostrich feathers, fruit, cotton and to- bacco. Through the federation the local farmers’. co-operatives will both sell their various products, purchase sup- plies and provide insurance. The South African ‘government is extending aid to the co-operators through its land ’ bank. The manager.of the land bank is one of the co-operative federation ‘officials. The federation already has estab- lished a sales office in London for South African products and plans to establlsh a similar office in New York. A CRITICISM Editor Nonpartisan Leader: In your issue of September 20 you ask us to ex- press opinions of the Leader. First, it has one great fault and I hope. steps will- be taken at once to remedy -it. There’s not enough of-it"and it {s too long between drinks. Otherwise I have not a singlé criticism to offer, in fact, must commend it very highly. Colorado farmers’ interests are dif- ferent from North Dakota and Min- nesota—alfalfa hay, sugar beets, fruit, potatoes, canteloupes. and considerable ‘livestock. Consequently we must ap- peal in other ways than terminal ele- vators and mills.. The potato grower, beet grower and fruit man are at the mercy of their commission men and the sugar trust. ‘Prices have been ‘very high for hay, but alfalfa hay is down to $11 and $9 today and mills all | closed. The wool men can buy noth- ing, as there is no market for their wool, and now the hay men, and there are thousands of them, can buy noth- ing..- And now if cotton, corn and wheat drop, as they probably will, we can retire to our cyclone cellar. Wishing you many returns of your | birthday and hoping I may live to help you enjoy ‘them, I remain, fraternally yours,: - W. V. GALLAHER. R. 2, Pueblo, Col. FIBER CROPS INCREASE Fiber crops—hemp and flax—show- .ed a large increase in the United States last year, the United States .department of agriculture announces. The fiber flax acreage was 6,000, and the yield from 800 to 400 pounds per acre, at 75 cents a pound. The principal fiber flax regions are Wis- consin, Michigan, Oregon ‘and Min- nesota. ~ “Wisconsin supplies abou half the total hemp, Minnesota and Michigan: coming next. While most of the hemp is used for twine it is now mixed with flax for shoe thread, ex- tending the market. ADVERTISEMENTS Here Is a League members at $1.25 Crops.
